  1. 1. Phase Modulation Techniques for On-Off Keying in Optical Fibre Transmission

    Author : Marco Forzati; Chalmers University of Technology; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; return-to-zero; fibre optics communication; phase modulation; nonlinear optics; dispersion management; high-speed optical transmission; modulation formats; fibres;

    Abstract : Increasing the channel bit rate is an efficient way to upgrade traffic capacity in installed transmission links. At bit rates of the order of 40 Gb/s, on-off keying (OOK) transmission becomes severely impaired by non-linear effects especially Intra-channel Four-Wave Mixing (IFWM) which limit the power at which the signal can be transmitted, and ultimately the transmission distance. 2. 2. Time-Resolved Spectroscopy for Pharmaceutical Applications

    Author : Christoffer Abrahamsson; Atomfysik; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Elektromagnetism; optik; Near-infrared spectroscopy; Time-resolved spectroscopy; Pharmaceutical analysis; Multivariate data analysis; Electromagnetism; Light transport in turbid media; Photon migration; akustik; acoustics; optics;

    Abstract : The work presented in this thesis aims at improving spectroscopic techniques for analysis of pharmaceutical solids. This improvement is achieved by the combining and development of instrumentations and data evaluation tools from two research fields: the fields of near infrared spectroscopy and biomedical optics. 3. 3. Investigations of Issues Relevant to the Application of Photon Echoes in Information Technology

    Author : Ulf Elman; Atomfysik; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; nonlinear optics; fibre amplifier; Boolean operation; rare earth metals; Atom- och molekylärfysik; Atomic and molecular physics; optical processing; photon echo; optical storage; Fysicumarkivet A:1998:Elman;

    Abstract : Photon echoes have been studied both experimentally and theoretically, with the main part of the work centred around the concept of using photon echoes for all-optical data storage and processing. The four basic Boolean operators, AND, OR, NOT and XOR have been experimentally demonstrated using photon echoes. READ MORE

  4. 4. New innovative methods for non-intrusive optical diagnostics of high-voltage insulator materials

    Author : Magnus Bengtsson; Atomfysik; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Atom- och molekylärfysik; Atomic and molecular physics; akustik; optik; optics; acoustics; Electromagnetism; Microbiology; bacteriology; virology; mycology; Mikrobiologi; bakteriologi; virologi; mykologi; fluorescence; optical diagnostics; high-voltage insulation; remote sensing; polymeric insulators; lidar; biological contamination; Gases; fluid dynamics; plasmas; Gaser; fluiddynamik; plasma; Energy research; Energiforskning; Elektromagnetism;

    Abstract : The purpose of this PhD thesis work has been to develop optical techniques that can help utility engineers for assessing the state of insulators in service and in a laboratory. The possibilities to use remote laser induced fluorescence for detection and imaging of biological growth such as algae and fungi have been investigated. READ MORE

  5. 5. Whiteness and Fluorescence in Paper : Perception and Optical Modelling

    Author : Ludovic Gustafsson Coppel; Per Edström; Håkan Olin; Caisa Johansson; Markku Hauta-Kasari; Mittuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Paper Whiteness; Fluorescence Whitening Agents; Kubelka-Munk; light scattering; paper industry applications; Colour Appearance Models; CIECAM02; Monte Carlo; Optics; Optik;

    Abstract : This thesis is about modelling and predicting the perceived whiteness of plain paper from the paper composition, including fluorescent whitening agents. This includes psycho-physical modelling of perceived whiteness from measurable light reflectance properties, and physical modelling of light scattering and fluorescence from the paper composition.
