1. Structural Elements in Native Celluloses
Abstract : In this thesis, a schematic model for the structure ofaggregated cellulose I fibrils is proposed. The model consistsof a crystalline fibril core surrounded by less orderedcellulose forms. These cellulose forms are fibril surfacesaccessible to water, fibril surfaces inaccessible to water andpara-crystalline cellulose. READ MORE

2. Molecular mechanisms in amyloid fibril formation
Abstract : This thesis concerns investigations on molecular processes and interactions that lead to amyloid fibril formation. Pulmonary surfactant protein C (SP-C), and a synthetic analogue thereof, SP-C(Leu), have similar properties in terms of charge distribution, hydrophobicity and secondary structure, yet they differ in their aggregation propensities. 3. Amyloid β peptide: from monomer solubility to fibril structure
Abstract : Alzheimer´s disease (AD) is the most common human neuro-degenerative disease characterized by the formation of cerebral plaques. Several are the amyloid-beta (Aβ) variants found in the brain of healthy individuals. READ MORE

4. Roles of intermolecular interactions in amyloid fibril formation mechanisms
Abstract : Amyloid fibrils, a major pathological feature of several neurodegenerative disorders, are highly stable, insoluble aggregates of misfolded proteins. The formation of such aggregates involves a complex equilibrium between protein monomers, different on- and off-pathway transient oligomeric species, and amyloid fibrils. READ MORE

5. Structural changes during cellulose composite processing
Abstract : Two approaches for creating a new all-cellulose composite material have been studied: the biosynthesis of compartmentalised bacterial cellulose fibril aggregates and the compression moulding of commercial chemical wood pulps processed with only water. The objective was to study the structural changes during processing and the complexity of relating the mechanical properties of the final biocomposites to the nanoscale structure was highlighted.
