  1. 1. Essays on Field Experiments and Impact Evaluation

    Author : Remidius Denis Ruhinduka; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; adaptation to climate change; ambiguity; artefactual field experiment; behavioraleconomics; charcoal; credit; deforestation; endogenous switching regression; field experiment; guilt; honesty; impact evaluation; kindness; liquidity constraint; LPG stoves; rice marketing; risk preferences; system of rice intensification; Tanzania; time preferences;

    Abstract : Paper 1: Improving Welfare Through Climate-Friendly Agriculture: The Case of the System of Rice Intensification We use rich survey data to investigate the economic impact of a climate-friendly rice farming method known as the system of rice intensification (SRI) on the welfare of rain-dependent small-holder farmers in Tanzania. SRI reduces water consumption by half, which makes it a promising farming system in the adaptation to climate change in moisture constrained areas, and it does not require flooding of rice fields, resulting in reduced methane emissions. 2. 2. Moisture Influence on Structural Behaviour of Pavements : Field and Laboratory Investigations

    Author : Farhad Salour; Sigurdur Erlingsson; Guy Doré; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Falling Weight Deflectometer FWD ; backcalculation; unbound material; subgrade; seasonal variation; moisture content; spring-thaw; drainage; pavement stiffness; field test; pavement instrumentation; resilient modulus; permanent deformation; repeated load triaxial test; unsaturated soil; matric suction.; Civil and Architectural Engineering; Byggvetenskap; Transportvetenskap; Transport Science;

    Abstract : The structural behaviour of pavements in cold regions can considerably be affected by seasonal variation in environmental factors such as temperature and moisture content. Along with the destructive effect of heavy traffic loads, climatic and environmental factors can considerably contribute to pavement deterioration. READ MORE

  3. 3. High Power Microwave Sources : design and experiments

    Author : Cecilia Möller; Nils Brenning; Stefan Silfverskiöld; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Space physics; Rymdfysik; Plasma physics; Plasmafysik;

    Abstract : High-Power Microwaves (HPM) can be used to intentionally disturb or destroy electronic equipment at a distance by inducing high voltages and currents. This thesis presents results from experiments with a narrow band HPM source, the vircator. READ MORE

  4. 4. Resonant magnetic perturbation effect on the tearing mode dynamics : Novel measurements and modeling of magnetic fluctuation induced momentum transport in the reversed-field pinch

    Author : Richard Fridström; Per Brunsell; Lorenzo Frassinetti; Tommaso Bolzonella; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; RFP; reversed-field pinch; tokamak; tearing mode; RMP; fusion; plasma; resonant magnetic perturbation; stochastic; magnetic; field; viscosity; mode; locking; Electrical Engineering; Elektro- och systemteknik;

    Abstract : The tearing mode (TM) is a resistive instability that can arise in magnetically confined plasmas. The TM can be driven unstable by the gradient of the plasma current. When the mode grows it destroys the magnetic field symmetry and reconnects the magnetic field in the form of a so-called magnetic island. READ MORE

  5. 5. Human Behaviour in Social-Ecological Systems : Insights from economic experiments and agent-based modelling

    Author : Caroline Schill; Therese Lindahl; Anne-Sophie Crépin; Johan Colding; Carl Folke; Juan Camilo Cárdenas; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Human behaviour; Common-pool resources; Ecological complexity; Collective action; Sustainable resource use; Regime shifts; Thresholds; Uncertainty; Communication; Knowledge-sharing; Economic experiments; Laboratory and field experiments; Agent-based modelling; Complex adaptive systems; Social-ecological systems; Sustainability Science; vetenskap om hållbar utveckling;

    Abstract : Progress towards sustainability requires changes in our individual and collective behaviour. Yet, our fundamental understanding of behaviour in relation to environmental change remains severely limited. READ MORE
