  1. 11. Fire history and tree population dynamics in Białowieża Forest, Poland and Belarus

    Author : Ewa Zin; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Fire history and fire regime parameters in relation to the long-term tree population dynamics were studied with dendroecological methods across coniferous habitats of Białowieża Forest (E Poland and W Belarus), a semi-natural European temperate woodland ecosystem. In four different studies various aspects of fire dynamics were explored by using nearly 1500 tree ring samples of Pinus sylvestris and Picea abies. READ MORE

  2. 12. Plant ecological studies related to restoration of a degraded ecosystem in central Tanzania

    Author : Shadrack Eliapenda; Ingvar Backéus; Karin Bengtsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental biology; Conservation; land degradation; population growth rate; population structure; regeneration; Utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; Ecological Botany; Ekologisk botanik;

    Abstract : Kondoa Irangi area is among the most degraded ecosystems in Central Tanzania as a result of heavygrazing, fire, collection of fuelwood and improper cultivation practices. The restoration process of thisdegraded ecosystem through natural regeneration is slowed by the semi-arid climate of the area combinedwith poor soil nutrient status. READ MORE

  3. 13. Fire behaviour of selected polymeric materials : Numerical modelling and validation using microscale and bench scale test methods

    Author : Abhishek Bhargava; Avdelningen för Brandteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; DAEM; pyrolysis modelling; Polymer flammability; mass loss rate; Heat release rate HRR ;

    Abstract : The ability to predict fire behaviour of materials is of key interest to building materials industry. Themain reason for it is expensive fire testing and certification costs borne by the manufacturers to bring a finished product to market. READ MORE

  4. 14. Aspects of regeneration in tropical secondary forests of Northeast Borneo affected by selective logging, El Niño-induced drought and fire

    Author : Eva Romell; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : A large proportion of the world´s tropical rainforests are today secondary forests, a term encompassing forests in various degrees of degeneration. For the main traits of old-growth forests´ structures, species composition and ecosystem functions to recover, regeneration of non-pioneer tree species is essential. READ MORE

  5. 15. Numerical modeling of the coupled feedback between pool fires and their environment

    Author : Jonathan Wahlqvist; Avdelningen för Brandteknik; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is often used within performance based fire safety engineering and its use has increased as available computational power has increased. However, there is still a need to improve CFD modeling to push it beyond its current usage limitations. READ MORE
