  1. 16. Effects of aging and inflammatory molecules on the suprachiasmatic circadian clock

    Author : Mikael Nygård; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Circadian; suprachiasmatic; synaptic; inflammation; cytokine; SOCS; interferon; tumor necrosis factor; neuron; firing;

    Abstract : The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) is considered the master circadian pacemaker in the mammalian brain and is vital for generating physiological and behavioral circadian rhythms. During aging and inflammatory conditions the circadian system is frequently affected, but relatively little is known about the mechanisms underlying such effects. READ MORE

  2. 17. Circadian rhythm dysfunction in the suprachiasmatic nucleus : effects of Trypanosoma brucei brucei infection and inflammatory cytokines

    Author : Gabriella B Lundkvist; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Suprachiasmatic nucleus; slice; Trypanosoma brucei; sleeping sickness; spontaneous firing; rhytm; synaptic activity; GABA; glutamate; AMPA cytokines; sleep regulation; interferon-gamma; tumor necrosis factor-alpha;

    Abstract : Alterations in the mammalian circadian pacemaker, the hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN), were studied in an experimental rat model of African trypanosomiasis, or sleeping sickness, caused by infections with subspecies of Trypanosoma brucei (T b). Characteristic signs of the disease are marked disturbances in circadian rhythms, such as a fragmentation of the sleep-wake cycle. READ MORE

  3. 18. Role of potassium channels in regulating neuronal activity

    Author : Göran Klement; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Potassium channels; threshold dynamics; trafficking; hERG; SMOCs; excitability;

    Abstract : The firing behaviour of excitable cells is fundamental for the information processing in multicellular organisms, varying from single spikes to different forms of repetitive firing. Of the many regulators, voltage gated potassium channels play a major role. In this thesis some aspects of the potassium channel regulation of firing are explored. READ MORE

  4. 19. Porcelain veneering of titanium : clinical and technical aspects

    Author : Per Haag; Malmö högskola; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Guld- och andra legeringar har i många år använts som material vid framställning av kronor och broar för ersättning av skadade eller förlorade tänder. Emellertid har tvivel uppstått kring lämpligheten av att använda guldlegeringar i tandersättningar, då guld har visat sig kunna ge biverkningar i form av allergiska reaktioner. READ MORE

  5. 20. Influence of kynurenic acid on dopamine neurotransmission : implications for schizophrenia

    Author : Alexandra Andersson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Kynurenic acid (KYNA) belongs to the kynurenines, a group of metabolically related compounds derived from the amino acid tryptophan. It is an antagonist of glutamate- and α7 nicotinic acetylcholine (α7nACh) receptors. Increased levels of KYNA have been observed in the cerebrospinal fluid and postmortem brains of patients with schizophrenia. READ MORE
