  1. 6. Factors controlling pelagic communities of freshwater ciliates and heliozoans

    Author : Ulrika Stensdotter-Blomberg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental biology; ciliates; heliozoans; freshwater; nutrients; predation; microbial food web; Utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; limnologi; Limnology;

    Abstract : Ciliate diversity and seasonal succession were studied during two years in oligotrophic,acidic Lake Njupfatet. Maximum ciliate abundance occurred shortly after ice-out. After thefirst year, the lake was neutralised by liming. Liming caused changes in the bacterioplanktonand phytoplankton communities, but no change in ciliate diversity. READ MORE

  2. 7. Temporal and spatial variation in the community composition of lake bacterioplankton

    Author : Eva S. Lindström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; bacterioplankton; freshwaters; 16S rDNA; DGGE; community composition; Biologi; Biology; Biologi; limnologi; Limnology;

    Abstract : Bacterioplankton are among the smallest and most abundant organisms in lake ecosystems. Due to the lack of relevant methods, the taxonomic composition of bacterioplankton has been studied less thoroughly than that of larger organisms. READ MORE

  3. 8. Experimental Studies on the Regulation of Pigment Dynamics in Phytoplankton and Copepods by Dissolved Inorganic Nutrients

    Author : Lies Van Nieuwerburgh; Pauli Snoeijs; Ulf Båmstedt; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; Astaxanthin; Baltic Sea; carotenoids; diatoms; eutrophication; food web; mesocosms; microalgae; M74 syndrome; oxidative stress; phytoplankton blooms; zooplankton; Biologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : This thesis examines the role of dissolved inorganic nutrients in generating changes in phytoplankton community and pigment composition and if such changes can affect the production of the antioxidant astaxanthin in the ecosystem via pelagic copepods. The background of my studies is the possible relationship between eutrophication and a reproductive disturbance in Baltic populations of Atlantic salmon (M74), which is associated with astaxanthin and thiamine deficiencies and oxidative stress. 4. 9. Pathogenesis and Cell Biology of the Salmon Parasite Spironucleus salmonicida

    Author : Ásgeir Ástvaldsson; Staffan Svärd; Jon Jerlström-Hultqvist; Scott Dawson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Diplomonads; Spironucleus; Giardia; genome; annexin; oxygen stress; APEX; pathology;

    Abstract : Spironucleus species are classified as diplomonad organisms, diverse eukaryotic flagellates found in oxygen-deprived environments. Members of Spironucleus are parasitic and can infect a variety of hosts, such as mice and birds, while the majority are found to infect fish. READ MORE

  5. 10. Comparative Cell Biology in Diplomonads

    Author : Elin Einarsson; Staffan Svärd; Scott Dawson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Giardia intestinalis; Spironucleus salmonicida; intestinal parasite; hydrogenosome; encystation; gene regulation; transfection; diplomonad; antigenic variation; annexin;

    Abstract : The diplomonads are a diverse group of eukaryotic flagellates found in microaerophilic and anaerobic environments. The most studied diplomonad is the intestinal parasite Giardia intestinalis, which infects a variety of mammals and cause diarrheal disease. READ MORE
