  1. 1. Microdialysis in reconstructive surgery : a clinical and experimental study focusing on monitoring flap metabolism and viability

    Author : Jonas Röjdmark; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Microdialysis; monitoring; flap metabolism; glucose; lactate; glycerol; pyruvate; ischemia; reperfusion; arterial occlusion; venous occlusion; tissue necrosis; laser doppler flowmetry; fluorescein;

    Abstract : When flap procedures are used to repair complex tissue wounds adequate flap circulation is of supreme importance. If the circulation is disturbed by either vascular occlusion, hemorrhage, or infection, delayed healing and flap necrosis may ensue. READ MORE

  2. 2. Pedicled and free TRAM flaps in breast reconstructions : a comparative study

    Author : Åsa Edsander-Nord; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : breast reconstruction; TRAM; pedicled flap; free flap; microdialysis; monitoring; flap circulation; flap metabolism; glucose; lactate; glycerol; abdominal muscles; trunk muscle strength; KIN-COM; quantitative sensory testing; tactile perception threshold; thermal perception threshold; breast volume; thermoplastic; quality of life; SF-36; esthetic evaluation; applanation tonometry;

    Abstract : The transverse rectus abdominis musculocutaneous (TRAM) flap is frequently used when autologous tissue is desired for breast reconstruction, and it can be transferred pedicled or free. The pedicled TRAM flap is elevated as a lower transverse abdominal flap with the rectus abdominis muscle attached in the epigastric area, by which means the deep superior epigastric vessels nourish the flap. 3. 3. Leukotriene C4 synthase : studies on oligomerization and subcellular localization

    Author : Jesper Svartz; Mats Söderström; Sven Hammarström; Colin Funk; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Leukotrienes (LTs) are polyunsaturated fatty acid derivatives formed by oxygenation of arachidonic acid via the 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO) pathway. Upon activation of inflammatory cells 5-LO is translocated to the nuclear envelope where it converts arachidonic acid to the unstable epoxide LTA4. READ MORE

  4. 4. Role of inflammatory and mitochondria genes in adipose tissue and obesity

    Author : Maria Kaaman; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Obesity is rapidly increasing in prevalence around the world together with its complications such as dyslipidemia, cardiovascular disease (CVD) and insulin resistance, which eventually may lead to type 2 diabetes (T2DM). The excess of adipose tissue, the hallmark of obesity, led us to study the adipose tissue as a contributor to obesity and insulin resistance. READ MORE

  5. 5. Leukotriene C4 synthesis and export in human platelets and leukocytes : LTC4 synthase expression in normal and leukemic myeloid cells

    Author : Mikael Sjölinder; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Leukotriene (LT)C4 synthase catalyses conjugation of the unstable epoxide LTA4 with reduced glutathione and is the rate-limiting enzyme in the formation of cysteinyl leukotrienes, powerful mediators of asthma and inflammation. The presence of LTC4 synthase in platelets was demonstrated by purification and characterization of bovine platelet LTC4 synthase. READ MORE
