  1. 1. Fibre flow mechanisms

    Author : Roger Bergström; Ulf Björkman; Bo Norman; Mark Martinez; KTH; []
    Keywords : ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Fibre flow; floc; shear; compression; fibre network; stress chain; Cellulose and paper engineering; Cellulosa- och pappersteknik;

    Abstract : The flow behaviour, and primarily the floc-floc interaction, of pulp paper suspensions have been studied visually. Analogy models based on these observations have been developed as well as the identification of important parameters of floc break-up in low shear rate flow fields. READ MORE

  2. 2. Properties of Activated Sludge Flocs

    Author : Britt-Marie Wilen; Chalmers University of Technology; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; floc strength; aerobic microbial activity; reflocculation; dissolved oxygen concentration; settling; deflocculation; filamentous microorganisms; shear forces; floc size; activated sludge;

    Abstract : The quality of the effluent from activated sludge treatment plants is highly dependent on the efficiency of the solid-liquid separation process. The aim of this thesis was to study (i) the effects of dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration on effluent turbidity and flocculation, as well as on the settling properties of activated sludge, for both short term and long term scales, and (ii) the influence of aerobic microbial activity on the stability of activated sludge flocs. 3. 3. Flocculation with Polyelectrolytes in Latex and Microbial Systems

    Author : Leif Eriksson; Fysikalisk kemi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; floc strength; shear sensitivity; fractal dimension; floc structure; patch flocculation; adhesion; bridging; flocculation; charge compensation; adsorption; ionic strength; molecular weight; charge density; Cationic polyelectrolytes; latex; bacteria; activ; Physical chemistry; Fysikalisk kemi;

    Abstract : Adsorption of cationic polyelectrolytes onto polystyrene latices was studied as function of polymer chemical composition and molecular weight, polymer and surface charge density and ionic strength. The ratio between polymer charges and surface charges was close to one when distances between polymer and surface charges were equal. READ MORE

  4. 4. The effects of cellulosic fiber charges on polyelectrolyte adsorption and fiber-fiber interactions

    Author : A. Elisabet Horvath; Lars Wågberg; Stefan Zauscher; KTH; []
    Keywords : ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; adsorption; electrolyte; polyelectrolyte; polyelectrolyte titration; stoichiometry; fluorescence; CLSM; carboxymethylation; ESCA; charge ration; colloidal interactions; mechanical forces; network strength; floc; CPM; rehometer; Cellulose and paper engineering; Cellulosa- och pappersteknik;

    Abstract : The surface charges of cellulosic fibers contribute to several papermaking operations that influence the manufacture and final properties of paper. This thesis investigates the effect of the surface charges on wet-end chemistry, e.g. READ MORE
