  1. 16. Office illness : the worker, the work and the workplace

    Author : Berndt Stenberg; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Sick Building Syndrome; Indoor Air Syndrome; facial skin symptoms; constitutional factors; psychosocial factors; indoor air quality; outdoor air flow rate; electromagnetic conditions; VDT work;

    Abstract : The work started with the clinical observations in patients working in buildings with indoor air problems. Signs of seborrhoeic dermatitis, erythematous facial skin conditions and itching conditions on the trunk were noted. Another point of departure was the attribution of facial skin symptoms to VDT work by patients. READ MORE

  2. 17. Studies on the prevalence of reduced salivary flow rate in relation to general health and dental caries, and effect of iron supplementation

    Author : Håkan Flink; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Unstimulated whole saliva; stimulated whole saliva; resting saliva; xerostomia; dry mouth; hyposalivation; caries; remaining teeth; body mass index; iron deficiency; serum ferritin; circadian rhythm;

    Abstract : Background: Reduced salivary flow is a condition that affects oral health. Its prevalence is unknown in young and middle-aged adults and there is no known treatment that permanently increases the salivary flow rate. Reduced salivary flow is related to dental caries, the most common oral disease. READ MORE

  3. 18. Microdialysis as a tool for the management of diabetes mellitus

    Author : Neda Rajamand Ekberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Microdialysis; microdialysis flow rate; adipose tissue; glucose; lactate; pyruvate; glycerol; insulin; IGFBP- 1; OGTT;

    Abstract : Diabetes complications are the result of impaired metabolic control. A continuous glucose monitoring system could be a tool to improve metabolic control. Microdialysis is a minimal invasive method for investigating tissue metabolism in-vivo and provides a novel opportunity for glucose monitoring in patients with diabetes (DM). READ MORE

  4. 19. Studies on oral clearance of citric acid and its effect on enamel erosion

    Author : Enas Badawi Bashir; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Citric acid; Saliva; Site specificity; Degree of saturation; In vitro model; Flow rate; Enamel erosion; Clearance rate; Frequency; Microradiography; Scanning microscopy;

    Abstract : Citric acid in foods is one of the most important factors causing erosionof enamel. The aims were to study citric acid clearance from the oral cavity, the effect of the clearance on the salivary saturation with respect to hydroxyapatite (OHAp) and the effect of the clearance rate and frequency of the citric acid challenges on enamel erosion. 5. 20. Nasal airway nitric oxide : methodological aspects and influence of inflammation

    Author : Jörgen Palm; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Asthma; breath test; exhaled air; rhinitis; sinuses; sinusitis; diurnal variation; gender; nasal; oral; nitric oxide; volume flow rate; AIDS; HIV; endotoxin; gut; human; shock; allergy.;

    Abstract : Nitric oxide (NO) is an endogenously formed free radical gas involved in numerous biological processes. In 1991 NO was discovered to be present in exhaled air of humans. Soon after, it was reported that the largest amounts of NO were found in the upper airways, and that the levels of NO were increased in the lower airways of patients with asthma. READ MORE
