  1. 1. Regulators of Membrane Fluidity

    Author : Kiran Busayavalasa; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; PAQR; LRIG; membrane fluidity;

    Abstract : Caenorhabditis elegans PAQR-2 (a homolog of the mammalian AdipoR1 and AdipoR2 proteins) and IGLR-2 (homolog of the mammalian LRIG proteins) form a complex at the plasma membrane that regulates fatty acid desaturation to protect against saturated fatty acid-induced membrane rigidification. Maintenance of membrane homeostasis is fundamental for most cellular processes and, given its importance, robust regulatory mechanisms must exist that adjust lipid composition to compensate for dietary variation. 2. 2. Membrane Fluidity Regulation: From C. elegans to mammalian cells

    Author : Ranjan Devkota; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; PAQR-2; adiponectin receptors; IGLR-2; saturated fats; membrane fluidity; fatty acid desaturation; unsaturated fatty acid; membrane homeostasis;

    Abstract : Biological membranes are primarily an assembly of lipids and proteins. Collectively, these constituents within a phospholipid bilayer determine the physical membrane properties such as fluidity, viscosity, thickness, packing and permeability. Maintenance of membrane properties within acceptable margins, i.e. READ MORE

  3. 3. Process development for investment casting of thin-walled components : Manufacturing of light weight components

    Author : Mohsin Raza; Björn Fagerström; Jarfors Anders; Mälardalens högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Investment casting; fluidity; thin sections; porosity; grain structure; turbine blades and Niyama criterion; Innovation and Design; innovation och design;

    Abstract : Manufacturing processes are getting more and more complex with increasing demands of advanced and light weight engineering components, especially in aerospace industry. The global requirements on lower fuel consumption and emissions are increasing the demands in lowering weight of cast components. READ MORE

  4. 4. Foreign molecules in biomembranes : Molecular effects on intact stratum corneum and model lipid systems

    Author : Quoc Dat Pham; Fysikalisk kemi; []
    Keywords : stratum corneum; lipid; keratin filament; protein; DMPC; penetration enhancer; osmolyte; solvent; monoterpene; fatty acid; hydration; molecular mobility; fluidity; permeability; PT ssNMR; diffusion cell;

    Abstract : This thesis mainly explores how the molecular mobility of lipid and protein components in the outermost layer of the skin, the stratum corneum (SC), varies with different conditions and upon adding foreign compounds. These studies require methods that makes it possible to detect and characterize the minor amount of fluid components in the highly ordered solid SC sample with resolved molecular information. 5. 5. Fluorescence fluctuation studies of biomolecular interactions in solutions, biomembranes and live cells

    Author : Volodymyr Chmyrov; Jerker Widengren; Antoine Delon; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; FCS; FCCS; Isomerization; TRAST; NMR; FRET; biomombrane; fluidity; Biological Physics; Biologisk fysik;

    Abstract : Fluorescence spectroscopy and imaging have a very broad spectrum of applicationswithin the life sciences, in particular for detection and characterization ofbiomolecular dynamics and interactions in different environments. This thesis comprisesprojects that strive to further expand the information content extracted fromthe detected fluorescence, leading to sensitive readout parameters for studies ofbiomolecular dynamics and interactions.
