6. Galanin : a modulator of serotonin neurotransmission : relevance for depression
Abstract : Galanin is widely distributed throughout the central nervous system with multiple and diverse biological roles. In the rat, galanin-like immunoreactivity is expressed in a population of5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT, serotonin) neurons in the dorsal raphe (DR) with extensive projections to the forebrain areas e.g., hippocampus. 7. Spinal motoneurones and the bulbospinal serotonininergic system in aged rats with behavioral deficits
Abstract : The expression of neuropeptides, growth-related proteins and neurotrophin receptors were studied in motoneurons of young adult rats and in aged rats with symptoms of neuromuscular incapacities. Also studied were aging-related changes in the descending serotoninergic (5HT) bulbospinal system which constitutes a major afferent pathway to spinal motoneurons. READ MORE

8. Development of LC-MS/MS Methods for the Analysis of Chiral and Achiral Pharmaceuticals and Metabolites in Aqueous Environmental Matrices
Abstract : This thesis describes the development of liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) methods for the trace analysis of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and their metabolites in aqueous environmental matrices. The research was focused on the development of chiral LC-MS/MS methods for the analysis of fluoxetine and metoprolol, as well as their chiral metabolites in environmental water samples. READ MORE

9. Clinical and Pharmacological Aspects of Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors in the Treatment of Depression in Old Age
Abstract : Objective: The aim of the present thesis is to examine the pharmacokinetic and biochemical effects of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) in the elderly. Background: Symptoms of depression are found in up to 15% of the elderly and the prevalence of major depression is reported to be about 3%. 10. Cell damage and tissue repair in the central nervous system : electron mi[c]roscopy study of neuronal death and cell replacement
Abstract : The central nervous system is vulnerable to various insults and particularly to ischemia. To mimic ischemia, a photochemical or compression lesion was induced in the right sensory motor cortex of rat brains. READ MORE
