  1. 1. Quality of life and markers of inflammation : a study of asthma in primary care

    Author : Per Olof Ehrs; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Mild Asthma; primary care; quality of life; airway inflammation; bronchial responsiveness; fluticasone.;

    Abstract : Asthma is a chronic disease that usually is diagnosed and treated in primary care. Most patients have a mild to moderate disease. Asthma is considered to be caused by inflammation of the airways. READ MORE

  2. 2. Prevalance of upper airway symptoms and aspects on treatment of nasal polyposis

    Author : Petter Olsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Non-allergic rhinitis symptoms; prevalence; randomised controlled trial; nasal polyposis; functional endoscopic sinus surgery; mometasone furoate nasal spray; fluticasone propionate nasal drops; olfaction; health related quality of life; SF-36;

    Abstract : Background: Non-allergic rhinitis is a disease that is often trivialised, leading to inadequate management and unnecessary costs. One of the most common types of severe non-allergic nasal inflammation is nasal polyposis. Nasal polyposis is associated with asthma. READ MORE

  3. 3. Effects of glucocorticoids or beta 2-agonists on inflammatory responses induced by organic dust in vitro and in vivo

    Author : Alexandra Ek; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Exposure of healthy subjects in a swine barn causes an acute inflammatory response in the airways and an increase in bronchial responsiveness to methacholine. The aim of this thesis was to study the mechanisms by which glucocorticoids or Beta2-agonists interfere with the inflammatory response following swine house dust-exposure both in vitro and in vivo. 4. 4. Nebulized corticosteroid in septic lung injury : An experimental study in pigs

    Author : Sten Walther; Bo Risberg; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Sepsis is occasionally complicated by the adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Auto injury by immunocompetent cells are given a central role in the pathogenesis, but our understanding of the mechanisms remains fragmentary. Treatment in septic ARDS is mainly supportive, no causal therapy exists. Mortality is high at 50-70%. READ MORE

  5. 5. Studies on the deposition, bioavailability and systemic activity of glucocorticoids in man

    Author : Lars Thorsson; Avdelningen för klinisk kemi och farmakologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmacological sciences; systemic activity; glucocorticosteroids; lung deposition; systemic availability; inhalation; pharmacognosy; pharmacy; toxicology; Farmakologi; farmakognosi; farmaci; toxikologi;

    Abstract : The local deposition, pharmacokinetics, and systemic activity of inhaled and intranasal glucocorticosteroids in different formulations and devices(ICSs) has been investigated. After nasal administration of the ICS budesonide (Bud), the systemic availability (F) was found to be significantly higher from an aqueous pump spray and from the powder inhaler Turbuhaler, than from a pressurized metered dose inhaler (pMDI), and the uptake process was slower and less complete with the pMDI formulation.
