1. Microbial Responses to Antibiotics – Stability of Resistance and Extended Potential of Targeting the Folate Synthesis
Abstract : Resistance to antimicrobials is an increasing problem in the world of today, and develops faster than man can counter. It is therefore of importance to study metabolic pathways in order to develop new antibiotics, but also to understand how resistance spreads and stabilizes in microbial populations. READ MORE

2. Folate - Associations with breast cancer depending on intake, metabolism, genetic variation and estrogen receptor status
Abstract : Folate is a B-vitamin that may influence cancer development via its role as methyl donor for DNA synthesis and methylation. Plant foods contain many bioactive compounds including folate and fiber. Results from the Malmö Diet and Cancer (MDC) cohort indicate lower breast cancer risk at high fiber intake. READ MORE

3. DNA methylation in the placenta and in cancerwith special reference to folate transporting genes
Abstract : DNA methylation is an epigenetic mechanism that regulates the gene transcription. Folate is used in cellular synthesis of methyl groups, nucleic acids and amino acids. In complex diseases like cancer and neural tube defects (NTD), various genetic and epigenetic alterations can be found that disrupt the normal cell function. READ MORE

4. Biomarkers of one-carbon metabolism in colorectal cancer risk
Abstract : One-carbon metabolism, a network of enzymatic reactions involving the transfer of methyl groups, depends on B-vitamins as cofactors, folate as a methyl group carrier, and amino acids, betaine, and choline as methyl group donors. One-carbon metabolism influences many processes in cancer initiation and development such as DNA synthesis, genome stability, and histone and epigenetic methylation. READ MORE

5. Folate in cancer and cardiovascular disease : prospective studies from the population-based northern Sweden health and disease study
Abstract : BACKGROUND: Folate, a B-vitamin found primarily in fruits and vegetables, especially leafy greens, and other B-vitamins involved in folate metabolism are believed to protect against cancer and cardiovascular disease. Maintaining an adequate folate status ensures availability of methyl groups for DNA synthesis and for all methylation reactions in the body, and prevents the accumulation of homocysteine, a sulphur-containing amino acid that has been linked to cardiovascular disease.
