  1. 1. Folate, Hormones and Infertility : Different factors affecting IVF pregnancy outcome

    Author : Tiina Murto; Anneli Stavreus-Evers; Agneta Skoog Svanberg; Sven-Eric Olsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Folate; folic acid supplement; homocysteine; hormones; infertility; IVF; lifestyle factor; MTHFR; predictive value; socioeconomic factor; women; Obstetrik och gynekologi; Obstetrics and Gynaecology;

    Abstract : Various hormones have been studied as regards prediction of pregnancy outcome after infertility treatment, but no ideal candidate has been found. Folate and genetic variations in folate metabolism have also been associated with infertility, but it remains unclear how these factors affect IVF pregnancy outcome. READ MORE

  2. 2. Vascular mechanisms in dementia with special reference to folate and fibrinolysis

    Author : Nils-Olof Hagnelius; Torbjörn K. Nilsson; Teodoro Bottiglieri; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; dementia; Alzheimer’s disease; vascular dementia; folate; homocysteine; vitamin B12; CSF Serum folate ratio; fibrinolysis; tPA; PAI-1; Geriatrics and medical gerontology; Geriatrik och medicinsk gerontologi; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Geriatrik; Geriatrics; Medicin; Medicine;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to study the biomarker homocysteine and other novel potential vascular risk factors for dementia. In an out-patient based study of a cohort of 926 consecutive subjects referred to our Memory Unit during 1996―2000, serum-folate was lower and total plasma homocysteine (tHcy) and serum methyl malonate were higher in subjects being prescribed with B12. 3. 3. Genetic variation in the folate receptor-alpha and methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase genes as determinants of plasma homocysteine concentrations

    Author : Anna Böttiger; Torbjörn Nilsson; Henrik Zetterberg; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; Folate receptor-alpha; Folate; FOLR1; Haplotypes; Homocysteine; Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase; MTHFR; Polymorphisms; Pyrosequencing®; SSCP; Medicine; Medicin; Biomedicin; Biomedicine;

    Abstract : Elevated total plasma homocysteine (tHcy) is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease and neurocognitive disease such as dementia. The B vitamins folate and B12 are the main de terminants of tHcy. tHcy concentration can also be affected by mutations in genes coding for receptors, enzymes and transporters important in the metabolism of Hcy. 4. 4. Studies on Vitamin B12 and Folate Deficiency Markers in the Elderly : A Population-based Study

    Author : Karin Björkegren; Kurt Svärdsudd; Åke Schwan; Herman Nilsson-Ehle; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Medicine; Cobalamin; folate; MMA; tHcy; multivitamin; symptoms; survey; treatment trial; Medicin; Dermatology and venerology; clinical genetics; internal medicine; Dermatologi och venerologi; klinisk genetik; invärtesmedicin; Family Medicine; Allmänmedicin;

    Abstract : The aims of this study were to document the levels of cobalamin, folate, methylmalonic acid (MMA) and total homocysteine (tHcy) in serum and their relations to symptoms, clinical findings, and other factors in order to improve the possibilities of detecting early deficiency of vitamin B12 or folate, and to study the effects of cobalamin and folic acid treatment over a three-year period. The study population consisted of a 20% random sample of persons 70 years or older living in Älvkarleby in mid-Sweden. READ MORE

  5. 5. Cobalamin/folate status and its relation to cognition and behaviour in psychogeriatric patients

    Author : Karin Nilsson; Lund Psykiatri; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; klinisk psykologi; Psykiatri; psychosomatics; clinical psychology; Psychiatry; folate; Cobalamin; homocysteine; methylmalonic acid; dementia; psychogeriatric patients; delirium; psykosomatik;

    Abstract : The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic potentials of four different biochemical markers, serum cobalamin, blood folate, plasma homocysteine and serum methylmalonic acid for diagnosis of cobalamin/folate deficiency in a psychogeriatric population. The second aim was to investigate the relationship between these markers and various clinical and functional parameters of the nervous system in patients with dementia disorders. READ MORE
