21. Aspects of infant food factors on intestinal inflammation and effects of probiotics in celiac disease autoimmunity
Abstract : Aims: The overall aim of this thesis was to study dietary components with focus on exposure and ability to affect gutpermeability, peripheral immune response and gut microbiota in children at genetic risk of developing CD. Thespecific aims were to study presence of food components that might induce intestinal inflammation, evaluatepossible effects on intestinal permeability by food emulsifiers, investigate if two different strains of Lactobacillaceaeaffect ongoing CD autoimmunity and gut microbiota composition. 22. Impact of Bifidobacterium longum and Lactobacillus acidophilus on the intestinal microflora and bioavailability of some food mutagens
Abstract : The gastrointestinal microflora is a complex ecological system, normally characterised by a flexible equilibrium. The most important role of the microflora, from the point of view of the host, is probably to act in colonisation resistance against exogenous, potentially pathogenic, microorganisms. READ MORE

23. Attenuation of Oxidative Stress, Inflammation and Colorectal Oncogenesis by Food Constituents: Ischaemia/Reperfusion Injury and Induced Colitis in Rodents
Abstract : The enteric microbiota is increasingly implicated as a central factor in the development of intestinal inflammation in humans and experimental animals, and the intestinal environment is considered important in both colorectal cancer development and modulation of mucosal immunity. Diet-induced changes in the different populations of the intestinal microbiota can be achieved by use of probiotic bacteria, dietary fibre and berries rich in phenolic compounds. READ MORE

24. Studies on the prevalence of reduced salivary flow rate in relation to general health and dental caries, and effect of iron supplementation
Abstract : Background: Reduced salivary flow is a condition that affects oral health. Its prevalence is unknown in young and middle-aged adults and there is no known treatment that permanently increases the salivary flow rate. Reduced salivary flow is related to dental caries, the most common oral disease. READ MORE

25. Restrictive eating disorders: aetiological, epidemiological and neurodevelopmental aspects
Abstract : Restrictive Eating Disorders (EDs), including Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) and Anorexia Nervosa (AN), are characterised by severely restricted food intake, commonly leading to substantial weight loss and significantly low weight, and the need for nutritional supplementation. The overarching aim of this thesis was to elucidate specific aetiological, epidemiological, and neurodevelopmental aspects of ARFID and AN, including the genetic aetiology of AN, the link between AN and autism spectrum disorder (ASD), the prevalence of ARFID, and the comorbidity of ARFID with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs).
