  1. 1. Finding the unknowns in trans-translation

    Author : Natalia Ivanova; Måns Ehrenberg; Nenad Ban; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Molecular biology; trans-translation; tmRNA; SmpB; kinetics; footprinting; Molekylärbiologi; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi;

    Abstract : Ribosomes stalled on problematic mRNAs can be rescued by a mechanism called trans-translation. This mechanism employs a dual transfer-messenger RNA molecule (tmRNA) together with a helper protein (SmpB). In this work we have used an in vitro translation system with pure components to further clarify the roles of tmRNA and SmpB in trans-translation. READ MORE

  2. 2. Computational and experimental approaches to regulatory genetic variation

    Author : Malin Andersen; Jacob Odeberg; John Peden; KTH; []
    Keywords : ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Molecular biology; Genetics; single nucleotide polymprhism SNP ; regulatory SNP; transcription factor binding site; phylogenetic footprinting; allelic imbalance; EMSA; CD36; cardiovascular disease.; Genetic engineering including functional genomics; Genteknik inkl. funktionsgenomik;

    Abstract : Genetic variation is a strong risk factor for many human diseases, including diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease, depression, autoimmunity and asthma. Most of the disease genes identified so far alter the amino acid sequences of encoded proteins. READ MORE

  3. 3. The eukaryotic ribosome in focus : a chemical footprinting analysis of ribosome-ligand interactions in in vivo assembled complexes

    Author : Marika Salonen Sloma; Diarmaid Hughes; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Cell biology; Cellbiologi; Zoological Cell Biology; zoologisk cellbiologi;

    Abstract : Protein synthesis is an essential biological process that occurs on ribosomes. The process requires an involvement of numerous components like mRNA, tRNA and translation factors. The mammalian 80S ribosome, the focus of this thesis, is composed of four rRNAs and approximately 80 proteins distributed in two subunits the 40S and 60S subunit. READ MORE

  5. 5. In silico prediction of CIS-regulatory elements

    Author : Albin Sandelin; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; Transcriptional regulation; transcription factor binding sites; phylogenetic footprinting; pattern finding; pattern comparison;

    Abstract : As one of the most fundamental processes for all life forms, transcriptional regulation remains an intriguing and challenging subject for biomedical research. Experimental efforts towards understanding the regulation of genes is laborious and expensive, but can be substantially accelerated with the use of computational predictions. READ MORE
