  1. 6. Domestication effects on foraging behaviour : consequences for adaptability in chickens

    Author : Christina Lindqvist; Per Jensen; Björn Forkman; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Etologi; chicken; domestication effects; behaviour; red jungle fowl RJF ; contrafreeloading CFL ; egg production; Ethnology; Etnologi;

    Abstract : The main aim of this thesis was to study domestication effects on foraging behaviour in chickens and to investigate whether and how domestication and selection for high production have influenced adaptability in chickens. Two domestic strains of chickens (egg layers and meat type chickens) and their wild ancestor, the red jungle fowl (RJF) were compared in different test situations with respect to foraging behaviour and adaptability. 2. 7. Through the eyes of a woodpecker: Understanding habitat selection, territory quality and reproductive decisions from individual behaviour

    Author : Ola Olsson; Biodiversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; reproductive success; territory quality; habitat selection; giving-up density; Bayesian processes; foraging; Picidae; lesser spotted woodpecker; Dendrocopos minor; conservation; Animal ecology; Djurekologi;

    Abstract : In this thesis I present some connections between foraging behaviour and reproductive success, time budget, tree species use, and habitat selection. The thesis is based upon both theoretical and empirical work. All empirical studies concern a south Swedish population of lesser spotted woodpeckers Dendrocopos minor, studied between 1990 and 1996. 3. 8. Salmonid behaviour under winter conditions

    Author : Johan Watz; Larry Greenberg; Eva Bergman; John Piccolo; Richard Cunjak; Karlstads universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; climate change; drift; energy budget; foraging; grayling; ice cover; lotic; metabolic rate; predation; salmon; stream; stress; temperature; trout; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : Winter conditions are believed to play an important role in the population dynamics of northern temperate stream fish, challenging the ability of fish to physiologically and behaviourally adapt. Climate change is predicted to increase both mean temperature and temperature fluctuations, especially during winter, leading to dynamic environmental conditions in terms of river ice production and flow. 4. 9. Individual variation in behaviour: personality and performance of brown trout in the wild

    Author : Bart Adriaenssens; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : behavioural syndromes; personality; life-history; boldness; hatchery; survival; growth; foraging; anti-predator behaviour; learning; brown trout;

    Abstract : Individuals from the same population often show very different behaviour. These differences, when consistent across time, are referred to as animal personality or behavioural syndromes. Explaining the occurrence of animal personality from an evolutionary perspective has however proven a difficult issue to tackle. READ MORE
