  1. 1. Perturbance and Stimulation : using Nitrogen Addition and High-Throughput Sequencing to Study Fungal Communities in Boreal Forests

    Author : Andreas N. Schneider; Nathaniel Street; Vaughan Hurry; Torgny Näsholm; Colin Averill; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Boreal forest; Scots pine; Norway spruce; ectomycorrhiza; saprotroph; fertilization; nitrogen; mycobiome; rhizosphere; decomposition; carbon; seedling establishment; forest management; clearcutting;

    Abstract : Fungal communities are major players in globally important nutrient cycling processes, and form symbioses with most terrestrial plants. In the nitrogen (N) limited Swedish boreal forest, ectomycorrhizal (EcM) fungi colonize most roots of the economically important and stand dominating conifer species, Norway spruce (Picea abies) and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), with significant implications for tree nutrition and decomposition processes. 2. 2. Effects of drought on boreal forest understory species

    Author : Irena A. Koelemeijer; Kristoffer Hylander; Johan Asplund; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; biodiversity conservation; boreal forests; bryophytes; canopy cover; climate change; drought; extreme climatic events; forest management; forest understory; fungi; lichens; plants; rainout shelter; soil communities; soil moisture; transplant experiment; Ecology and Evolution; ekologi och evolution;

    Abstract : Extreme climatic events, such as droughts, can have large effects on biodiversity. Drought effects in forest understories are variable over small spatial scales and can be exacerbated, or buffered, by the local vegetation structure, distance to forest edges, hydrology, and soil characteristics. 3. 3. Land use effects on greenhouse gas emissions from boreal inland waters

    Author : Marcus Klaus; Jan Karlsson; Peter Staehr; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; greenhouse gas; boreal forest; carbon cycling; whole-ecosystem experiment; limnology; metabolism; forest clearcutting; nitrogen enrichment;

    Abstract : Anthropogenic activities perturb the global carbon and nitrogen cycle with large implications for the earth’s climate. Land use activities deliver excess carbon and nitrogen to aquatic ecosystems. In the boreal biome, this is mainly due to forestry and atmospheric deposition. READ MORE

  4. 4. Population dynamics of small mammals in relation to habitat factors in natural and managed forests

    Author : Frauke Ecke; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Landscape Ecology; Landskapsekologi;

    Abstract : The influence of forest age and structural habitat factors on species richness and the population dynamics of small mammals were evaluated. Small mammals were monitored both in old-growth and in immature managed forests, and habitat factors were recorded. READ MORE
