1. PACAP in adult sensory neurons - implications in injury and pain
Abstract : The data presented in this thesis deal with the neuropeptide pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP) in adult sensory neurons. We have used different injury and pain models to determine the involvement of PACAP during such conditions. The role of neurotrophins for PACAP expression was also investigated. READ MORE

2. Brain galanin sytems and their role in depression-like behaviour
Abstract : The aim of the present thesis was to investigate the role of the neuropeptide galanin and galanin receptor subtypes in behavioural functions with a particular focus on depression-like behaviour. In agreement with its wide distribution in the central nervous system, galanin has been implicated in various functions, including regulation of reproduction, endocrine functions, antinociception, attention, learning and memory as well as regulation of mood. 3. Evaluation of the Rift Valley fever vaccination program in Mozambican cattle
Abstract : Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a viral disease that is spread by various arthropods (primarily mosquitoes) and affects ruminants and humans. RVF has led to tremendous losses of livestock in many African countries, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen, and its zoonotic impact on human deaths has been documented in most of the endemic countries where large outbreaks have occurred. 4. Synthesis and structure activity relationships of competitive NMDA antagonists with analgesic activity
Abstract : The compounds cis-3-(1-oxo-2-phosphonoethyl)-2-piperidinecarboxylic acid 1 and cis-3-(1-hydroxy-2-phosphonoethyl)-2-piperidinecarboxylic acid 2 were synthesized and found to be potent N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) antagonists. NMR analysis showed that 1 prefers a 2eq,3ax chair conformation probably due to a conformer-stabilizing internal hydrogen bond. READ MORE

5. Human papillomaviruses in skin cancer and cervical cancer
Abstract : The causal relationship between persistent genital infections with human papillomavirus (HPV) and development of cervical cancer is well established. In contrast, the significance of infections with cutaneous HPV for development of non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) is not well understood. READ MORE
