11. Atomic Scale Modelling in Photoelectrocatalysis : Towards the Development of Efficient Materials for Solar Fuel Production
Abstract : Using sunlight to produce valuable chemicals has been pointed out as an interesting alternative to deal with the well-known environmental problem related to the use of fossil fuels for energy generation. Thus, it is crucial for this field the development of novel photocatalysts that could drive the uphill reactions with high efficiency while presenting low price and toxicity. READ MORE

12. Electrochemical Reactions in Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells
Abstract : The polymer electrolyte fuel cell converts the chemical energy in a fuel, e.g. hydrogen or methanol, and oxygen into electrical energy. The high efficiency and the possibility to use fuel from renewable sources make them attractive as energy converters in future sustainable energy systems. READ MORE

13. Colour changes and acid formation in wood during heating
Abstract : Heating wood has since ancient times been a method to dry and modify its properties. Nowadays heat is used in industrial processes for the same reasons. Treatment at temperatures above 150ºC can change the colour, improve resistance to biodegradation and enhance dimensional stability. READ MORE

14. Vibrational Sum Frequency Spectroscopy Studies at the Air-Liquid Interface
Abstract : In this thesis the structure and hydration of small organic and amphipilic compounds adsorbed at the air-liquid interface, have been studied using the nonlinear optical technique Vibrational Sum Frequency Spectroscopy (VSFS). The second order nature of the sum frequency process makes this technique particularly surface sensitive and very suitable for interfacial studies, as molecules at the surface can be distinguished even in the presence of a vast excess of the same molecules in the bulk. 15. Synthesis and characterization of palladium based carbon nanostructure-composites and their clean-energy application
Abstract : Carbon nanostructures are a wide field with many applications. The use of carbon nanostructures as support in heterogeneous catalysis is a key development that led together with the use of nanoparticles to a significant cost reduction of catalysts. Catalysts designed in this way are widely applied in fuel cell technologies. READ MORE
