  1. 1. Space-Time Prediction of Ocean Winds

    Author : Anders Malmberg; Matematisk statistik; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Statistics; operations research; image warping; thin-plate splines.; near-surface ocean winds; variogram parameters; Space-time Kalman filtering; real-time assimilation; residual wind speed; actuarial mathematics; programming; Statistik; operationsanalys; programmering; aktuariematematik;

    Abstract : The topic of this thesis is inspired by an experiment in which a vessel, laying a submarine cable, was provided with forecasts overlaid with satellite observations of significant wave height. During the operation, the vessel was close to an adverse weather area and the personnel on board could confirm that the forecast was not as close to the "ground truth" as the satellite observation was. 2. 2. Aggregating Case Studies of Vehicle Crashes by Means of Causation Charts : An Evaluation and Revision of the Driving Reliability and Error Analysis Method

    Author : Jesper Sandin; Per Lövsund; Chalmers University of Technology; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Accident; Cause; Classification; Characteristics; Driver; Error; 81 Road: Accidents; 81 Road: Accidents; 841 Road: Road user behaviour; 841 Road: Road user behaviour;

    Abstract : There is a need for increased knowledge about causes to motor-vehicle crashes and their prevention. Multidisciplinary in-depth case studies can provide detailed causation data that is otherwise unattainable. Such data might allow the formulation of hypotheses of causes and causal relationships for further study. READ MORE

  3. 3. VAR Models, Cointegration and Mixed-Frequency Data

    Author : Sebastian Ankargren; Johan Lyhagen; Yukai Yang; Gregor Kastner; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; vector error correction; small open economy; mixed-frequency data; Bayesian; steady state; nowcasting; state-space model; large VARs; simulation smoothing; factor stochastic volatility; R; Statistics; Statistik;

    Abstract : This thesis consists of five papers that study two aspects of vector autoregressive (VAR) modeling: cointegration and mixed-frequency data.Paper I develops a method for estimating a cointegrated VAR model under restrictions implied by the economy under study being a small open economy. 4. 4. Physics of Aftershocks in the South Iceland Seismic Zone : Insights into the earthquake process from statistics and numerical modelling of aftershock sequences

    Author : Mattias Lindman; Roland Roberts; Björn Lund; David Marsan; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Earthquake processes; Aftershocks; Physics of aftershocks; Omori law; Postseismic processes; Pore pressure diffusion; Poroelasticity; Statistical seismology; Self-organised criticality; Interevent time distributions; Waiting time distributions; Geophysics; Geofysik;

    Abstract : In seismology, an important goal is to attain a better understanding of the earthquake process. In this study of the physics of aftershock generation, I couple statistical analysis with modelling of physical processes in the postseismic period. READ MORE

  5. 5. Sparse Modeling of Harmonic Signals

    Author : Filip Elvander; Statistical Signal Processing Group; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; multi-pitch estimation; sparse modeling; convex optimisation; inharmonicity; sparse recursive least squares; adaptive signal processing; optimal transport distance;

    Abstract : This thesis considers sparse modeling and estimation of multi-pitch signals, i.e., signals whose frequency content can be described by superpositions of harmonic, or close-to-harmonic, structures, characterized by a set of fundamental frequencies. READ MORE
