  1. 1. Fossil Capital : The Rise of Steam-Power in the British Cotton Industry, c. 1825-1848, and the Roots of Global Warming

    Author : Andreas Malm; Humanekologi; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Fossil economy; steam-power; water-power; cotton industry; Britain; capital accumulation; global warming;

    Abstract : The more we know about the catastrophic implications of climate change, the more fossil fuels are burnt in the world. How did we get caught up in this mess? This thesis returns to a crucial moment in the emergence of the fossil economy: the rise of steam-power. READ MORE

  2. 2. Modelling District Heating Network Costs

    Author : Luis Sánchez-García; Urban Persson; Helge Averfalk; Erik Möllerström; Marcus Thern; Magnus Åberg; Sweden Lund Lund University; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; District Heating; Pipe network; Cost analysis; Distribution Capital Cost; Effective Width; Plot Ratio; Heat Density; GIS; Smart Cities and Communities; Smarta städer och samhällen;

    Abstract : The solution of the undergoing climate and energy crises requires a radical transformation of the energy system, in which sustainability, no carbon emissions and energy efficiency ought to play a paramount role. This revolution should extend to all areas of the energy system, including the space heating and cooling sector, which accounts for a third of the European final energy demand and, in the European continent, it is still mostly supplied by fossil fuels. 3. 3. District heating in future Europe : Modelling expansion potentials and mapping heat synergy regions

    Author : Urban Persson; Sven Werner; Lars J. Nilsson; Sweden Gothenburg Chalmers University of Technology; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; district heating; energy efficiency; distribution capital cost; heat demand density; plot ratio; excess heat recovery; sequential energy supply; heat utilisation rate; effective width;

    Abstract : This thesis presents a set of methodologies and approaches to investigate and determine the extent by which district heating can contribute to improved energy system efficiency and reduced carbon dioxide emissions in future Europe. The main motivation for suggesting large-scale implementation of district heating as a structural energy efficiency measure to obtain these objectives originates essentially in the predicament that a majority of European buildings today remain highly dependent on fossil fuels to provide energy needed for space heating and hot water preparation. Abstract : How did fossil-fuelled technology find its way to Egypt on its way to global dominance? This thesis presents a socioecological history of energy technologies in agrarian production in pre-colonial Egypt (1820s – 76). It situates them in the nineteenth century, understood as the beginning of the epoch of the Capitalocene; and in Egypt’s case, this is simultaneously part of the rise of Britain’s fossil empire.
