  1. 1. Thermally Modified Timber : Novel Aspects of Bending Behaviour Towards Grading and Structural Applications

    Author : Joran van Blokland; Stergios Adamopoulos; Anders Olsson; Jan Oscarsson; Mark Hughes; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; checks; cracks; digital image correlation; four-point static bending; fracture characteristics; grade determining properties; non-destructive testing; Norway spruce; machine learning; outdoor above-ground exposure; timber grading; scanning electron microscopy; scanning of fibre direction; strain distribution; ThermoWood®; weathering; Forestry and Wood Technology; Skog och träteknik; Byggteknik; Civil engineering;

    Abstract : Thermally modified timber (TMT) has gained market share in Europe as an environmentally friendly and durable building material. Unfortunately, TMT products are currently prohibited for use in structural applications as there is insufficient data to estimate the loss in strength due to thermal modification. READ MORE

  2. 2. Fatigue crack initiation and propagation in sandwich structures

    Author : Magnus Burman; KTH; []
    Keywords : TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIKVETENSKAP;

    Abstract : The focus throughout this thesis is on the fatigue characteristics of core materials used insandwich structures. Three sandwich configurations are investigated, two with cellular foamsand one with honeycomb core material These corresponds to typical materials and dimensionsused in the marine and aeronautical industry. 3. 3. Defects and Surfaces and their Impact on Fatigue Behaviour of Powder Bed Fused Ti-6Al-4V : Characteristics and Modelling

    Author : Viktor Sandell; Marta-Lena Antti; Pia Åkerfeldt; Thomas Hansson; Stefano Beretta; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Defects; Additive Manufacturing; Ti-6Al-4V; Probabilistic Modelling; Fatigue; Extreme Value Statistics; Materialteknik; Engineering Materials;

    Abstract : Additive manufacturing (AM), of metals is gaining popularity as an alternative to conventional manufacturing techniques such as casting and forging. Metal-AM allows for the production of complex part geometries with reduced material waste and shorter lead times. READ MORE

  4. 4. Energy Absorbing Material Concepts for Automotive Accident Injury Prevention

    Author : Rickard Juntikka; KTH; []
    Keywords : Head impact; energy absorption; cellular materials; automotive; dynamic; pedestrian; interior; compression; shear; finite element analysis; optimisation;

    Abstract : Although automotive safety has experienced a rapiddevelopment during the last decades, traffic related accidentsrank very high in many countries in terms of cause of death.Statistics show that the head is the body region mostfrequently injured in motor vehicle accidents and the primarycause of death is head injuries. 5. 5. Influence of microstructure on fatigue and ductility properties of tool steels

    Author : Mats Randelius; Rolf Sandström; Jens Bergström; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Tool steels; fatigue; ductility; carbides; carbide cluster; inclusion; size distribution; modelling; FEM; Metallurgical process engineering; Metallurgisk processteknik;

    Abstract : Fatigue and ductility properties in various tool steels, produced by powder metallurgy, spray forming or conventionally ingot casting, have been analysed experimentally and successfully compared to developed models. The models are able to predict the fatigue limit and cause for fatigue fracture, and strain- and stress-development until fracture during the ductile fracture process respectively. READ MORE
