  1. 1. Improved Techniques for Protein Analysis Focusing on Membrane Proteins and Hydrophobic Peptides

    Author : Theres Redeby; Åsa Emmer; Jonas ergquist; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Integral membrane proteins; Hydrophobic peptides; Sample handling; MALDI-TOF-MS; Structured sample support; CE; fraction collection; microchannel; Analytical chemistry; Analytisk kemi;

    Abstract : In this thesis, the vital cell functions performed by integral membrane proteins (IMPs) are briefly discussed. Such proteins are under-represented in most protein studies due to the hydrophobic nature of IMPs, which seriously complicate their solubilization, sample handling, preparation, separation and analysis. 2. 2. Measuring occupational dust exposure with a passive sampler

    Author : Mariam Shirdel; Ingvar Bergdahl; Britt Andersson; Håkan Wingfors; Christer Johansson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; dust particles; mineral; PM10; PM2.5; respirable fraction; UNC passive aerosol sampler; working environment;

    Abstract : Objectives: In a working environment it is important to measure dust exposure to evaluate possible health issues. Passive sampling could be an alternative to active sampling with pumps when measuring occupational dust exposure. One passive sampler is the University of North Carolina passive aerosol sampler (UNC sampler). READ MORE

  3. 3. Household food waste management – Evaluations of current status and potential improvements using life-cycle assessment methodology

    Author : Anna Bernstad; Avdelningen för kemiteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; waste management; household waste; food waste; life-cycle assessment; anaerobic digestion; systems analysis;

    Abstract : An increased understanding of the world’s limited resources and the negative environmental impacts connected to solid waste management has in recent years increased interest in separate collection and treatment of organic waste in many parts of the world. As an example, increased biological treatment of organic waste is an explicit goal within the Swedish national solid waste management strategy (SEPA, 2006) and the national environmental objectives state that 35% of all organic household waste should be treated biologically by 2010 (SEPA, 2007). 4. 4. E-epidemiology : adapting epidemiological methods for the 21st century

    Author : Christin Bexelius; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The traditional methods in epidemiological data collection are both costly and time consuming and less convenient for longitudinal large-scale studies. During the last decades, epidemiological studies suffer from low response rates, indicating a need to revise methods used in epidemiological data collection. READ MORE

  5. 5. Diversifying the utility and species composition of Nordic forage systems : new fractionation methods and novel legume species

    Author : Brooke Micke; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Leys, a temporary grassland grown as part of a crop rotation, represent an essential component of agricultural production in the Nordic countries. This thesis explores methods to diversify the utility of feed produced from leys through fractionation, as well as increase the diversity of legume species within the stand. READ MORE
