  1. 16. Strength and deformability of fractured rocks

    Author : Majid Noorian-Bidgoli; Lanru Jing; John A. Hudson; KTH; []
    Keywords : Fractured crystalline rocks; Numerical experiments; Discrete element methods DEM ; Discrete fracture network DFN ; Representative elementary volume REV ; Coupled hydro-mechanical processes; Anisotropy; Effective stress; Failure criteria; Stochastic realizations; Land and Water Resources Engineering; Mark- och vattenteknik;

    Abstract : This thesis presents a systematic numerical modeling framework to simulate the stress-deformation and coupled stress-deformation-flow processes by performing uniaxial and biaxial compressive tests on fractured rock models with considering the effects of different loading conditions, different loading directions (anisotropy), and coupled hydro-mechanical processes for evaluating strength and deformability behavior of fractured rocks. By using code UDEC of discrete element method (DEM), a series of numerical experiments were conducted on discrete fracture network models (DFN) at an established representative elementary volume (REV), based on realistic geometrical and mechanical data of fracture systems from field mapping at Sellafield, UK. 2. 17. Stress, Flow and Particle Transport in Rock Fractures

    Author : Tomofumi Koyama; Lanru Jing; Marc Boulon; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Numerical simulation; laboratory experiments; rock fracture; coupled stress-flow-tracer test; shear displacement; fluid flow; particle transport; finite element method FEM ; particle tracking method; Navier-Stokes equation; Reynolds equation; streamline velocity dispersion.; Geoengineering; Geoteknik;

    Abstract : The fluid flow and tracer transport in a single rock fracture during shear processes has been an important issue in rock mechanics and is investigated in this thesis using Finite Element Method (FEM) and streamline particle tracking method, considering evolutions of aperture and transmissivity with shear displacement histories under different normal stresses, based on laboratory tests. The distributions of fracture aperture and its evolution during shear were calculated from the initial aperture fields, based on the laser-scanned surface roughness features of replicas of rock fracture specimens, and shear dilations measured during the coupled shear-flow-tracer tests in laboratory performed using a newly developed testing apparatus in Nagasaki University, Nagasaki, Japan. 3. 18. Stress Effects on Solute Transport in Fractured rocks

    Author : Zhihong Zhao; Lanru Jing; Ivars Neretnieks; Auli Niemi; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Fractured rocks; Solute transport; Stress effects; Coupled stress-flow-transport processes; Analytical solution; Particle mechanics model; Fracture surface damage; Discrete element method; Particle tracking method;

    Abstract : The effect of in-situ or redistributed stress on solute transport in fractured rocks is one of the major concerns for many subsurface engineering problems. However, it remains poorly understood due to the difficulties in experiments and numerical modeling. READ MORE

  5. 20. Characterisation of Fractured Rock for Grouting Using Hydrogeological Methods

    Author : Åsa Fransson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; hydraulic test; specific capacity; grouting; water pressure test; geological mapping; grout take; aperture; penetration length; transmissivity;

    Abstract : Sealing of tunnels by grouting demands knowledge concerning the fractured rock and the grout, followed by an appropriate choice of strategy and equipment. In this thesis, the characterisation of rock is the main issue and, since it addresses the engineering problem of producing a description for grouting, the properties of grout and the grouting procedure need to be considered.
