  1. 1. Effects of Free Fatty Acids on Insulin and Glucagon Secretion : – with special emphasis on the role of Free fatty acid receptor 1

    Author : Hjalti Kristinsson; Peter Professor; Birgitte Holst; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; FFAR1; GPR40; palmitate; lipotoxicity; islets of Langerhans; type 2 diabetes; obesity; Medical Cell Biology; Medicinsk cellbiologi;

    Abstract : Prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is still rising and even so in the juvenile population. Obesity is highly associated with increased risk for developing T2DM. READ MORE

  2. 2. Free fatty acids and insulin hypersecretion studied in human islets

    Author : Jing Cen; Peter Bergsten; Miriam Cnop; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; free fatty acids; palmitate; human islets; EndoC-βH1 cells; metformin; sorcin; insulin secretion; mitochondrial respiration; ER stress; human transcriptome array; Medical Cell Biology; Medicinsk cellbiologi;

    Abstract : Free fatty acid (FFA) levels are increased in many obese subjects. High FFA levels stimulate the pancreatic beta-cells but have negative long-term effects. In obese children with high FFA levels circulating insulin concentration is high early in life but decline with age precipitating the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). READ MORE

  3. 3. Short- and long-term effects of long-chain free fatty acids on pancreatic α- and β-cell function

    Author : Charlotta Olofsson; Institutionen för experimentell medicinsk vetenskap; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; diabetologi; sekretion; Endokrinologi; diabetology; secreting systems; Endocrinology; type-2 diabetes.; intracellular free Ca2 ; exocytosis; Free fatty acids; pancreatic α- and β-cells;

    Abstract : We have investigated the in vitro effects of long-chain free fatty acids (FFAs) on mouse pancreatic α- and β-cells by a combination of electrophysiological recordings, intracellular Ca2+ ([Ca2+]i) microfluorimetry and hormone release measurements. Acute addition of the saturated FFA palmitate to intact islets doubled insulin as well as glucagon secretion in the presence of 1 or 15 mM glucose and the FFA remained capable of enhancing release of both hormones in islets depolarised with high K+ in the presence of the KATP channel opener diazoxide, indicating that alterations of ATP sensitive potassium (KATP) channel activity is not part of the effect. 4. 4. The Free Fatty Acid Receptor GPR40 - expression and role in islet hormone secretion

    Author : Erik Flodgren; Lund Medicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; diabetology; secreting systems; Endocrinology; GPCR; Glucagon; GPR40; Insulin; Free fatty acid; Endokrinologi; sekretion; diabetologi;

    Abstract : Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a serious condition of growing proportions. Developing via an increasing imbalance between insulin sensitivity in the peripheral tissues and insulin release from pancreatic beta-cells, it ultimately renders the individual incapable of regulating the blood glucose concentration, e.g. after a meal. 5. 5. Chemo-Enzymatic Epoxidation of Unsaturated Fatty Acids

    Author : Cecilia Orellana Coca Åkerman; Bioteknik; []
