  1. 1. Experimental cardiopulmonary cerebral resuscitation : with special reference to cerebral eicosanoid production and free radical scavengers

    Author : Xiaoli Liu; Marianne Forsman; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Anaesthesiology and intensive care; cerebral resuscitation; reperfusion damage; oxidative injury; eicosanoid; free radical scavenger; neurological function; alkaline buffer; S-PBN; PBN; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; Anaesthetics and intensive care; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; Anestesiologi; Anaesthesiology;

    Abstract : Reperfusion injury after restoration of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) is often considered one of the predominant factors in determining neurological outcome in cardiac arrest. Therefore one of the main targets of experimental and clinical studies has been to mitigate this reperfusion injury. READ MORE

  2. 2. Astrocytic communication and cell death during metabolic depression and oxidative stress

    Author : Christina Nodin; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : astrocyte; gap junction; ATP; ROS; oxidative stress; Annexin V; AIF; programmed cell death; Nrf2; scavenger; iodoacetate; SIN-1;

    Abstract : Stroke is a major cause of death and adult disability in the western world. Most often, stroke is caused by the occlusion of a brain artery. Within the perfusion territory of the occluded vessel, various degrees of necrotic and delayed programmed cell death will occur if the occlusion persists, leading to expanding tissue damage. 3. 3. Preterm intraventricular cerebral hemorrhage: role of cell-free hemoglobin

    Author : Alex Adusei Agyemang; Lund Pediatrik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Intraventricular hemorrhage; Preterm birth; Haptoglobin; Alpha 1 microglobulin; cerebellar hypoplasia; periventricular white matter; cell-free hemoglobin;

    Abstract : Cerebral intraventricular hemorrhage in preterm infants continues to be a major clinical problem associated with neurodevelopmental abnormalities manifested by cognitive, behavioral, attentional, social and motor deficits. Hypothesis and aims: The central thesis is that the cytotoxicity of extravasated blood and of consequently released cell-free hemoglobin(Hb) is pivotal for the pathophysiological events causally involved in brain injury. 4. 4. Impact of sepsis and HIV-1 infection on neutrophil radical production, lipids and lipoproteins

    Author : Börje Åkerlund; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : sepsis; HIV-1 infection; lipoprotein changes; free oxygen radicals; neutrophils; lipidperoxidation; oxidative stress; N-acetylcysteine;

    Abstract : In clinical sepsis a decrease in total serum cholesterol caused by reduced HDL and LDL cholesterol occurred early in the course of the infection with a normalisation after 2 months. This "sepsis HDL" was shown to contain the acute phase reactant SAA and it affected several functions of the neutrophil. READ MORE

  5. 5. Nitric oxide in brain contusion

    Author : Caroline Gahm; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Apoptosis; Colchicine; Dexamethasone; eNOS; human; immunohistochemistry; iNOS; L-NAME; L-NIL; neuronal degeneration; Nimodipine; nitric oxide; NO; nNOS; rat; SPBN; Tirilazad Mesylate; traumatic brain injury;

    Abstract : Trauma to the brain is a leading cause of death and disability. The primary injury initiates a cascade of biochemical reactions in the brain that causes further neuronal damage, a process referred to as secondary brain injury. READ MORE
