1. Modified and hybrid cellulose-based materials for water purification
Abstract : The need for clean water has led to the development of several different water treatment methods as well as to a large number of organic, inorganic, hybrid and/or composite materials that are used in these methods. Cellulose, being a highly abundant biopolymer with meritorious properties, such as high mechanical strength, tunable surface chemistry, high aspect ratio and surface area, to mention a few, is exploited in the current thesis for water treatment applications. 2. Revealing the potential of Nordic microalgae : turning waste streams into resources
Abstract : As the world's population grows, the demand for fresh water, food, fuel, energy and modern technology increases tremendously. Not only does this require enormous amounts of resources but it also increases the amount of waste and especially wastewater. READ MORE

3. Surface complexation in natural particle suspensions
Abstract : This thesis is a summary of our studies on (i) the proton and copper adsorption at aqueous illite surfaces, (ii) the proton and copper complexation of humic substances (fulvic acid FA and humic acid HA), (iii) the interaction between illite and fulvic acid, and (iv) the copper complexation behaviors in illite-FA bi-complexant systems. These particular studies were designed to help us develop a framework for modelling heavy metal complexation/adsorption mechanisms at natural particle surfaces. READ MORE

4. Experimental Design and Evaluation of Biocide Release from Microcapsules
Abstract : To protect a painted house façade from mold or algae, anti-growth agents are usually mixed in the paint. The protection of paint systems used in the past relied on heavy metals for protection and are banned today due to their negative impact on the environment. READ MORE
