  1. 21. The use of Fenton chemistry for reducing the refining energy during TMP production : the effect of free ferrous and free or chelated ferric ions

    Author : Karin Walter; Per Engstrand; Magnus Paulsson; Mittuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY;

    Abstract : The potential of using acid hydrogen peroxide under Fenton conditions to lowerthe electrical energy consumed during the production of Black spruce (Piceamariana) thermomechanical pulp (TMP) was investigated in pilot scale. Thechemical system, which consisted of ferrous sulphate, hydrogen peroxide andoptionally an enhancer (such as a chelating agent), was evaluated as an inter-stagetreatment. READ MORE

  2. 22. Metal-Free Catalysis for Efficient Synthesis

    Author : Juho Bah; Johan Franzén; King Kuok (Mimi) Hii; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Homogeneous c atalysi s; O rga nocatalysis; Green C hemistry; T o tal S ynthesis; A lkaloids; A symmetric S ynthesis; N on - metal Lewis acid s; C arbocations; Sustainability; Kemi; Chemistry;

    Abstract : The strength of efficient metal-free catalysis will be examined in this thesis. Efforts towards more sustainable processes will be demonstrated through implementation of strategies that meet several of the 12 principles of Green Chemistry. READ MORE

  3. 23. Is it the gluten-free diet that matters the most? : Food, gender and celiac disease

    Author : Ethel Kautto; Agneta Hörnell; Lena Aléx; Cecilia Olsson; Christina Berg; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; celiac disease; gluten-free diet; gender; dietary assessment; adolescents; qualitative interviews; Kostvetenskap; Food and Nutrition;

    Abstract : Background: The only treatment for celiac disease consists of excluding gluten. Gluten is a protein complex found in wheat, rye, and barley, which are cereals commonly used in bread, pasta, pizza, etc. READ MORE

  4. 24. Free fatty acids and insulin hypersecretion studied in human islets

    Author : Jing Cen; Peter Bergsten; Miriam Cnop; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; free fatty acids; palmitate; human islets; EndoC-βH1 cells; metformin; sorcin; insulin secretion; mitochondrial respiration; ER stress; human transcriptome array; Medical Cell Biology; Medicinsk cellbiologi;

    Abstract : Free fatty acid (FFA) levels are increased in many obese subjects. High FFA levels stimulate the pancreatic beta-cells but have negative long-term effects. In obese children with high FFA levels circulating insulin concentration is high early in life but decline with age precipitating the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). READ MORE

  5. 25. Computational prediction of ligand binding in peptide G-protein coupled receptors

    Author : Silvana Vasile; Hugo Gutiérrez-de-Terán; Johan Åqvist; Herman Van Vlijmen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; GPCR; neuropeptide Y; angiotensin II receptor; molecular dynamics; free energy perturbation; homology modelling; computer simulations; peptide binding; peptidomimetics; binding free energy.;

    Abstract : G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) are a superfamily of membrane receptors involved in a wide variety of biological processes, and their malfunction is associated with many diseases. Consequently, GPCRs are targeted by one-third of the drugs on the market, and constitute the focus of active public and private research in the search of more effective drugs. READ MORE
