  1. 26. Mating behaviour and sexual selection in non-lekking fallow deer (Dama dama)

    Author : David Stenström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; Fallow deer; mating behaviour; sexual selection; scent marking; plasticity of behaviour; antler asymmetry; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; Animal Ecology; zooekologi;

    Abstract : This thesis examines both behavioural and morphological traits influencing male mating success in non-lekking fallow deer (Dama dama). The thesis contains results based on behavioural observations and experimental studies made on Öland and around Uppsala, Sweden. READ MORE

  2. 27. Ecology and Evolution of Adaptive Morphological Variation in Fish Populations

    Author : Richard Svanbäck; Peter Eklöv; Lennart Persson; Beren Robinson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; competition; functional morphology; individual specialization; inter-individual variation; intra-population variation; morphological variation; ontogeny; Perca fluviatilis; perch; phenotypic plasticity; predation; trade-offs; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Abstract : The work in this thesis deals with the ecology and evolution of adaptive individual variation. Ecologists have long used niche theory to describe the ecology of a species as a whole, treating conspecific individuals as ecological equivalent. READ MORE

  3. 28. Mechanisms structuring the pelagic microbial food web : Importance of resource and predation

    Author : Kristina Samuelsson; Agneta Andersson; Christiane Lancelot; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; pelagic microbial food web; bacteria; flagellates; ciliates; phytoplankton; mixotrophy; nutrient status; predation limitation; resource limitation; Baltic Sea; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Abstract : Temporal and spatial variations of pelagic microorganisms in the northern Baltic Sea were studied, as well as factors influencing their abundance and growth rates. Three main questions were asked 1) How does increased productivity influence the structure of the microbial food web? 2) Does predation limitation vary between trophic levels? 3) What is the relative importance of resource and predation limitation at different trophic levels?A field study in the northern Baltic Sea showed that dominating protozoa, flagellates and ciliates, increased with increasing primary productivity from north to south. 4. 29. Systematics of Lindenbergia and Campylanthus (Scrophulariaceae)

    Author : Mats Hjertson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; systematisk botanik; Systematic Botany;

    Abstract : The plant life of north-east Africa and Arabiahas received much interest in recent years, a fact illustrated by the various ongoing flora projects in the region, e.g., the Flora of Ethiopia and Eritrea, Flora of Somalia and Flora of Arabia. READ MORE

  5. 30. Trade-offs between life history traits and immune defence in the collared flycatcher Ficedula albicollis

    Author : Dag Nordling; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; Animal Ecology; zooekologi;

    Abstract : This thesis examines the effects of reproductive effort on immune function and parasite resistance in breeding collared flycatchers, Ficedula albicollis. It also focuses on the role of the immune function in the trade-off between number and fitness of offspring. READ MORE
