  1. 1. In Vitro Availability of Iron in High-Tannin Sorghum. Effect of Enzymatic Oxidation of Phenolic Compounds

    Author : Erika Matuschek; Chalmers University of Technology; []
    Keywords : bioavailability; catechol groups; polyphenols; polyphenol oxidase; iron; in vitro availability; tyrosinase; fruit extracts; sorghum; oxidation; tannins; galloyl groups;

    Abstract : Iron deficiency anemia is the most common nutritional disorder in the world. In low income countries, it is to a large extent caused by low bioavailability of iron in the vegetable diet. Vegetable diets contain large amounts of compounds that inhibit iron absorption, e.g. READ MORE

  2. 2. Antioxidant Capacity in Fruit and Vegetables -Cultivar Variation - Storage Conditions - Human Antioxidant Status

    Author : Jessica Nilsson; Tillämpad biokemi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; human plasma antioxidants; Brassica; strawberry; pea; cultivar; ABTS; FRAP; Total antioxidant capacity; TAC; Food and drink technology; Livsmedelsteknik;

    Abstract : The health-promoting effects of fruits and vegetables have been extensively discussed during the past decade since epidemiologic studies have shown relations between increased intake of fruit and vegetables and decreased incidences of several chronic diseases. It has been suggested that antioxidants are a main contributors to the observed effects, for example by acting as scavengers of free radicals. READ MORE

    Abstract : Antennal detection and central nervous integration of behaviourally relevant odours in scarab beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) was investigated, using the two Japanese scarabs Anomala cuprea and Phyllopertha diversa (Rutelinae), and the Central African fruit chafer Pachnoda marginata (Cetoniinae) as model species. Electrophysiological single cell recordings in A. READ MORE

  4. 4. The paradox of micronutrients : in vitro and human studies

    Author : Therese Woodhill; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Many essential micronutrients found in fruits and vegetables exhibit antioxidant properties, protecting against oxidation and oxidative stress. Their ability to react with electrons also enables them to act as pro-oxidants, causing damage opposed to preventing it. READ MORE

  5. 5. Water Supply in Tanzania and Performance of Local Plant Materials in Purification of Turbid Water

    Author : Nancy Marobhe; Gunno Renman; Gunnar Jacks; Msafiri Jackson; Tapio Katko; KTH; []
    Keywords : ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Antibacterial effect; Coagulant proteins; Vigna unguiculata; Parkinsonia aculeata; Ion exchange; Tanzania water supply; Water engineering; Vattenteknik;

    Abstract : Water supply services in urban and rural areas of Tanzania were reviewed and specific studies were carried out on water supply and on purification of turbid water sources using locally available plant materials in rural villages of Singida Rural District. The review showed that large proportions of urban and rural populations in Tanzania face acute water supply problems mainly due to poor planning, implementation and management of water supply projects, including an inability to address social, technical, operation and maintenance and financial issues.
