  2. 2. Biochemical parameters reflecting the intestinal ecology of healthy adults and alterations of these parameters in patients with ulcerative colitis or rheumatoid arthritis

    Author : Peter Benno; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Microflora-associated characteristics; cholesterol; coprostanol; urobilins; faecal tryptic activity; ulcerative colitis; rheumatoid arthritis; sulphasalazine;

    Abstract : The gastrointestinal microflora, the largest single collection of cells in the body, influence their human host in a variety of ways. Useful in this connection is the concept of Microflora-Associated Characteristics (MACs), which are defined as any anatomical structure or physiological, biochemical or immunological function in the host that is affected by the microflora. 3. 3. Methods for the Assessment of Long-Lived Radionuclides in Humans Resulting from Nuclear Activities or Accidents - Fission track analysis of trace-amounts 239Pu and a copper hexacyanoferrate kit for monitoring radiocaesium

    Author : Lena Johansson; Lund Medicinsk strålningsfysik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; caesium; plutonium; fission track analysis; urine; internal contamination; whole-body counting; Physics; Chernobyl; Fysik; Chemistry; Kemi;

    Abstract : Fission track analysis (FTA) was developed to be applied to ultra-low levels of 239Pu in bioassay samples. An analytical protocol was established for the FTA processing. The detection limit was determined to 1.5 µBq and the calibration constant was 24 fission fragments per µBq 239Pu. READ MORE

  4. 4. Molecular aspects of post-Chornobyl and sporadic papillary thyroid carcinoma

    Author : Andrii Dinets; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : papillary thyroid carcinoma;

    Abstract : Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) exhibits various molecular abnormalities, both when sporadic and radiation-related. PTC is still diagnosed in adult individuals who were younger than 18 years at the time of the Chornobyl accident in 1986 and lived within the contaminated area. READ MORE

    Abstract : Aim: The over-arching aim of this thesis was to study some metabolic functions of the gut microflora in children with known or screening detected celiac disease (CD) and their first-degree relatives. Materials: Study I. A number of 36 untreated CD children, 47 after at least 3 months on glutenfree diet (GFD) and 42 healthy controls (HC). Study II. READ MORE
