  1. 1. Models of the Distribution of Persistent Organic Pollutants in the Marine Environment

    Author : N. Johan Persson; Dag Broman; Kevin Jones; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; persistent organic pollutants; mass balance models; fugacity models; eutrophication; PCDD F; PCB; PCN; soot carbon.; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi;

    Abstract : Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) is a group of chemicals that are toxic, undergo long-range transport and accumulate in biota. Due to their persistency the distribution and recirculation in the environment often continues for a long period of time. READ MORE

  2. 2. Sources of dioxins and other POPs to the marine environment : Identification and apportionment using pattern analysis and receptor modeling

    Author : Kristina Sundqvist; Karin Wiberg; Mats Tysklind; Paul Geladi; Miriam Diamond; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; air-water gas exchange; chiral; congener pattern; enantiomer; enantiomeric fraction; fugacity; HCH; hexachlorocyclohexane; homologue profile; indicator congener; isomer pattern; pattern analysis; PCA; PCB; PCDD F; PMF; polychlorinated dibenzofuran; polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin; polychlorinated biphenyl; positive matrix factorization; principal component analysis; receptor modeling; source apportioning; source; source tracing; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi; Persistent organic compounds; Persistenta organiska föreningar;

    Abstract : In the studies underlying this thesis, various source tracing techniques were applied to environmental samples from the Baltic region. Comprehensive sampling and analysis of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) in surface sediments in Swedish coastal and offshore areas resulted in a unique data set for this region. 3. 3. Tools for Evaluating the Fate and Bioaccumulation of Organic Compounds in Aquatic Ecosystems

    Author : Erick Nfon; Ian Cousins; Jan Hendriks; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : Baltic Sea; Biomagnification; Exposure; Food web; Fugacity model; Stable isotopes; Organic contaminants; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; Applied Environmental Science; tillämpad miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : The bioaccumulation of organic contaminants in aquatic ecosystems has been a key focus in environmental toxicology over the last decades. Bioaccumulation is a key concept in ecological risk assessments since it controls the internal dose of potential environmental contaminants. READ MORE

  4. 4. The High-Pressure Study on the Fe - O System: Thermodynamics and Phase Transitions of Iron Ferrite (FeFe2O4)

    Author : Olga Shebanova; Peter Lazor; Viktor Struzhkin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Earth sciences; high pressure; high temperature; thermodynamics; phase transitions; magnetite; Geovetenskap; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap; mineralogi; petrologi och tektonik; Mineral Chemistry; Petrology and Tectonics;

    Abstract : Knowledge about the stability of phases and their relationships in the Fe-O system at high pressures and temperatures is essential in implications of the multifarious states of iron oxides for models of the evolution of the Earth. In this respect, the iron ferrite magnetite (FeFe2O4) plays a significant role since it participates in the control of geochemistry of ferric iron, and hence oxygen fugacity in the Earth`s deep interior.
