1. Synchrotron X-ray based characterization of technologically relevant III-V surfaces and nanostructures
Abstract : Innovative design and materials are needed to satisfy the demand for efficient and scalable devices for electronic and opto-electronic applications, such as transistors, LEDs, and solar cells. Nanostructured III-V semiconductors are an appealing solution, combining the excellent functional properties of III-V materials with the flexibility typical of nanostructures, such as the nanowires (NWs) studied here. 2. Supported Mono- and Bimetallic Gold Nanoparticle Catalysts for Different Organic Transformations
Abstract : Supported gold nanoparticles are emerging as an important class of catalysts for various organic transformations due to their tunable properties. This thesis embraces the fundamental studies of supported gold nanoparticles for different organic reactions from the viewpoint of understanding the role of synthesis methods, nature of carriers, and addition of second metal on the properties and functions of gold catalysts. 3. Ageing behaviour of steel slags in landfill liners
Abstract : Steel slags are by-products of the steelmaking process. To avoid unnecessary disposal, e.g. into landfill, their chemical and physical properties should be exploited to support alternative uses. READ MORE

4. Aging and Characterization of Semiconducting Glazes
Abstract : Semiconducting glazes on ceramic insulators had been introduced as a solution for improving the performance of high voltage insulators especially under heavily polluted conditions. The major concern in using such glazes, despite their approved advantages, is the observed aging of the surface with exposure time, leading to reduction of conductivity and deterioration of the glaze itself, especially under dc voltage.
