  1. 1. Functional association networks for disease gene prediction

    Author : Dimitri Guala; Erik L L Sonnhammer; Hjalmar Brismar; Yves Moreau; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; network biology; biological networks; network prediction; functional association; functional coupling; network integration; functional association networks; genome-wide association networks; gene networks; protein networks; fret; functional enrichment analysis; network cross-talk; pathway annotation; gene prioritisation; network-based gene prioritization; benchmarking; Biochemistry towards Bioinformatics; biokemi med inriktning mot bioinformatik;

    Abstract : Mapping of the human genome has been instrumental in understanding diseasescaused by changes in single genes. However, disease mechanisms involvingmultiple genes have proven to be much more elusive. Their complexityemerges from interactions of intracellular molecules and makes them immuneto the traditional reductionist approach. READ MORE

  2. 2. Characterisation of Functional Pressing Die Surfaces

    Author : Johan C Berglund; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; functional correlation; functional surface; functional filtration; pressing die; multi-scale analysis; characterisation; finish milling; texture anisotropy; polishing; surface topography;

    Abstract : The manufacture of dies and moulds is a critical aspect of many production systems since the manufacturing and try-out of new dies and moulds often is essential in determining the lead-time and quality of a new production system. In the automotive industry, many new car models are introduced each year and for each of these models, a new set of pressing dies has to be designed and manufactured. READ MORE

  3. 3. Theoretical Actinide Chemistry – Methods and Models

    Author : Pernilla Wåhlin; Ulf Wahlgren; Luis Seijo; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : Actinide; Quantum chemistry; Wave function; Density functional theory; Solvent models; Water exchange; Molecular configurations; Multi-reference density functional method; teoretisk fysik; Theoretical Physics;

    Abstract : The chemistry of actinides in aqueous solution is important, and it is essential to build adequate conceptual models and develop methods applicable for actinide systems. The complex electronic structure makes benchmarking necessary. READ MORE

  4. 4. Functional Traits in Sphagnum

    Author : Fia Bengtsson; Håkan Rydin; Gustaf Granath; Cronberg Nils; Sari Juutinen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; peat mosses; functional traits; NPP; decay resistance; N2 fixation; desiccation resistance; climate; Biology with specialization in Ecological Botany; Biologi med inriktning mot ekologisk botanik;

    Abstract : Peat mosses (Sphagnum) are ecosystem engineers that largely govern carbon sequestration in northern hemisphere peatlands. I investigated functional traits in Sphagnum species and addressed the questions: (I) Are growth, photosynthesis and decomposition and the trade-offs between these traits related to habitat or phylogeny?, (II) Which are the determinants of decomposition and are there trade-offs between metabolites that affect decomposition?, (III) How do macro-climate and local environment determine growth in Sphagnum across the Holarctic?, (IV) How does N2 fixation vary among different species and habitats?, (V) How do species from different microtopographic niches avoid or tolerate desiccation, and are leaf and structural traits adaptations to growth high above the water table?Photosynthetic rate and decomposition in laboratory conditions (innate growth and decay resistance) were related to growth and decomposition in their natural habitats. 5. 5. Functional Genomics of Bone Metabolism : Novel Candidate Genes Identified by Studies in Chicken Models

    Author : Carl-Johan Rubin; Andreas Kindmark; Östen Ljunggren; Leif Andersson; David Burt; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Molecular medicine; QTL; Bone; Osteoporosis; Gene expression; Microarray; Domestication; Molekylärmedicin;

    Abstract : Osteoporosis is a disease that leads to decreased bone mineral density (BMD), an altered bone micro-architecture and fragile bones. The disease is highly heritable and numerous genes are thought to be involved, making it difficult to identify the causative genetic elements. READ MORE
