  1. 1. Anatomical, neurochemical and behavioural consequences of immunotoxin lesions of the basal forebrain cholinergic system

    Author : Giampiero Leanza; Neurobiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neural transplantation; reinnervation; axon growth; functional sparing; memory; learning; cortex; hippocampus; immunolesion; acetylcholine; basal forebrain; rat; Neurology; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi; Physiology; Fysiologi;

    Abstract : The cholinergic hypothesis of geriatric memory dysfunction suggests that the learning and memory deficits representing the cardinal symptoms of dementia in the aged and in patients suffering from Alzheimer's disease may be attributable to a decline in the function of the cholinergic projection systems of the basal forebrain. Although many studies have addressed the issue of a causal relationship between cholinergic hypofunction and cognitive disturbance, analyses of the functional role of the basal forebrain cholinergic neuronal systems in the brain have so far been hampered by the lack of an efficient and specific cholinergic neurotoxin. 2. 2. Human aging, dopamine, and cognition : molecular and functional imaging of executive functions and implicit learning

    Author : Anna Rieckmann; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Age-related deficits are legion in task switching, updating of information in working memory (WM) and inhibiting irrelevant information, collectively referred to as executive functions. Executive functions are tightly coupled to the dopaminergic system, and marked dopamine (DA) losses are observed across adulthood and aging. READ MORE

  3. 3. On the detection and management of urinary bladder carcinoma

    Author : Andreas Thorstenson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Aims: To describe the diagnosis and clinical course of an unselected population-based cohort of patients with newly diagnosed transitional cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder. To assess if random bladder biopsies and the detection of concomitant carcinoma in situ have an impact on management and clinical outcome in bladder cancer patients. READ MORE

  4. 4. Inflammatory mechanisms in experimental CNS trauma

    Author : Jonas Isaksson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Genetics; Spinal cord injury; brain injury; ICAM-1; P-selectin; iNOS; inflammation; Genetik; Clinical genetics; Klinisk genetik; Pathology; patologi;

    Abstract : Traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries are important causes of premature death and permanentdisability. To improve the treatment of CNS-injured patients increased knowledge about thepathophysiological events that mediate death or dysfunction of nervous tissue is urgently needed. READ MORE

  5. 5. Preoperative local staging of prostate cancer : aspects on predictive models, magnetic resonance imaging and interdisciplinary teamwork

    Author : Fredrik Jäderling; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : In prostate cancer surgery the two issues at stake are the removal of the tumour on one hand and functional outcome i.e. urinary continence and sexual function on the other. READ MORE
