  1. 1. Avian malaria, life-history trade-offs and interspecific competition in Ficedula flycatchers

    Author : Katarzyna Kulma; Anna Qvarnström; Marlene Zuk; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Blood parasites; competitive asymmetry; immunocompetence; interspecific competition; life-history trade-offs; MHC; parasite-driven selection;

    Abstract : This thesis investigates the impact of avian malaria (Haemosporidia) parasites on the outcome of interspecific competition between two closely related bird species, pied (Ficedula hypoleuca) and collared (F. albicollis) flycatchers. READ MORE

  2. 2. Ecology and Evolution of Adaptive Morphological Variation in Fish Populations

    Author : Richard Svanbäck; Peter Eklöv; Lennart Persson; Beren Robinson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; competition; functional morphology; individual specialization; inter-individual variation; intra-population variation; morphological variation; ontogeny; Perca fluviatilis; perch; phenotypic plasticity; predation; trade-offs; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Abstract : The work in this thesis deals with the ecology and evolution of adaptive individual variation. Ecologists have long used niche theory to describe the ecology of a species as a whole, treating conspecific individuals as ecological equivalent. READ MORE

  3. 3. On User Involvement in Research on Ageing and Health

    Author : Joakim Frögren; Aktivt och hälsosamt åldrande; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Digital health; Housing provision; E-health; Dementia; Ageing in place; Built environment; Decision support; Housing accessibility; Housing and health; Research circle; Trade-offs; Planning; Public health; User involvement; Sweden; Older people; Ageing and older people; Mild Cognitive Impairment;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to explore the perceptions of, prerequisites for and benefits of user involvement among older people, persons with functional impairments and other user groups important to the research area. By using an adapted conceptual tool to categorize the various user involvement studies comprising the thesis, the aim wasalso to reflect on the importance of study design for the outcomes of the user involvement, and thus to contribute to the development of generalizable knowledge and cumulative knowledge in research on ageing and health. 4. 4. Functional Traits in Sphagnum

    Author : Fia Bengtsson; Håkan Rydin; Gustaf Granath; Cronberg Nils; Sari Juutinen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; peat mosses; functional traits; NPP; decay resistance; N2 fixation; desiccation resistance; climate; Biology with specialization in Ecological Botany; Biologi med inriktning mot ekologisk botanik;

    Abstract : Peat mosses (Sphagnum) are ecosystem engineers that largely govern carbon sequestration in northern hemisphere peatlands. I investigated functional traits in Sphagnum species and addressed the questions: (I) Are growth, photosynthesis and decomposition and the trade-offs between these traits related to habitat or phylogeny?, (II) Which are the determinants of decomposition and are there trade-offs between metabolites that affect decomposition?, (III) How do macro-climate and local environment determine growth in Sphagnum across the Holarctic?, (IV) How does N2 fixation vary among different species and habitats?, (V) How do species from different microtopographic niches avoid or tolerate desiccation, and are leaf and structural traits adaptations to growth high above the water table?Photosynthetic rate and decomposition in laboratory conditions (innate growth and decay resistance) were related to growth and decomposition in their natural habitats. 5. 5. Deciphering molecular mechanisms in the evolution of new functions

    Author : Hind Abdalaal; Joakim Näsvall; Paul Rainey; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Evolvability; functional trade-offs; collateral toxicity; duplication and amplification; Biologi med inriktning mot mikrobiologi; Biology with specialization in Microbiology; Biologi med inriktning mot molekylär evolution; Biology with specialization in Molecular Evolution;

    Abstract : The evolution of new genes and functions is considered to be a major contributor to biological diversity in organisms. Through de novo origination, “duplication and divergence”, and horizontal gene transfer, organisms can acquire new genetic material that can evolve to perform novel functions. READ MORE
