  1. 11. Below, above and beyond – seagrass ecosystem functions in a connected coastal landscape

    Author : Theodor Kindeberg; Biodiversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; coastal adaptation; beach wrack; eelgrass; carbon cycling; infauna; seagrass restoration; nature-based solution; biodiversity; eddy covariance; functional traits; Zostera marina;

    Abstract : Seagrass meadows constitute important habitat for a plethora of organisms, rendering them important habitats for conserving biodiversity. Seagrass meadows also modify the environment by attenuating wave and current energy. READ MORE

  2. 12. Consequences of bushmeat hunting in tropical forests

    Author : Edu Efiom; Biodiversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Tropical rainforests; bushmeat hunting; primates; seedling recruitment; interseedling competition; community composition; functional traits; ecosystem services; human livelihoods;

    Abstract : This thesis evaluates the effect of bushmeat hunting in southeastern Nigerian rainforests on: 1) adult tree, seedling, and animal community compositions 2) germination and survival among seedlings in association with competition 3) changes in community composition at multiple trophic levels 4) leaf nitrogen concentration (LNC), leaf mass per area (LMA) and stem specific density (SSD) 5) on human reliance on forest resources and rural people use forest resources. Data for the first four evaluations were obtained from surveys, manipulative experiments in seedling plots and collected leaf samples in three pairs of sites with high (hunted sites) and low (protected sites) hunting pressure but with similar adult tree composition. 3. 13. Plant community assembly in grazed grasslands

    Author : Bryndís Marteinsdóttir; Eriksson Ove; Cousins Sara A. O.; Johan Ehrlén; Meelis Pärtel; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Assembly rules; dispersal limitation; environmental filtering; establishment limitation; ex-arable fields; functional traits; landscape history; semi-natural grasslands; seed bank; seed augmentation; seed rain; trait based filtering; Plant Ecology; växtekologi;

    Abstract : Species assembly into local communities from the surrounding region can be caused either by species failure to reach the site (i.e. seed limitation) or to establish (i.e. READ MORE

  4. 14. Ground beetle dynamics in intensively managed agricultural landscapes

    Author : Erkki Palmu; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Carabidae; species richness; species diversity; functional traits; body size; emergence; dispersal; stable isotopes; deuterium; oxygen; crop diversification; landscape heterogeneity; agricultural management;

    Abstract : In this thesis I have focused on studying dynamics of ground beetle assemblages in intensively managed agricultural landscapes. By definition, the land cover of these landscapes is dominated by annually tilled farmland, comprising a range of different crop types, in the context of the southern Swedish province of Scania mostly winter wheat, spring barley, winter rapeseed, and sugar beets. 5. 15. The MHC genes: variation and impact on life-history traits in house sparrwos

    Author : Maria Karlsson; MEMEG; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MHC-I; house sparrow; 454-amplicon sequencing; cDNA; functional clustering; trans-species evolution; nestling survival; mate-choice;

    Abstract : In birds the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) organization differs both among and within orders. Galliformes often have simple arrangements with few transcribed MHC genes whilst many songbirds (Passeriformes) have a complex arrangement with many MHC genes and also presence of pseudo-genes.
