1. SOUnd-DRIven BIOtechnology
Abstract : Ultrasound has been vastly applied in different areas such as medical imaging and the food industry, but not much attempt has been made to investigate its influence on microorganisms and its potential to be applied in microbial biotechnology. Previous studies show the potential of acoustic waves to increase biomass yield, production of secondary metabolites and enhanced enzyme-catalyzed reactions, probably due to improved mass transfer and cell retention. 2. Colonisation and PAH degradation by wood-rotting fungi in contaminated soil
Abstract : Bioremediation of soils is considered a low-cost alternative to other remediation techniques. Its ability to remove a number of different pollutants has been demonstrated, relying mainly on the activities of indigenous soil bacteria. READ MORE

3. Fungal Redox Enzymes Involved in the Oxidation of Organic Pollutants
Abstract : This work describes the degradation of nonylphenol, toxaphene, phenanthrene, benzo[a]pyrene and dyes using fungi and their redox enzymes. Two fungi, Bjerkandera sp. strain BOL13 and Fusarium sp. strain BOL35 were isolated from different geographic area in Bolivia. READ MORE

4. Setosphaeria turcica, fungal mating and plant defence
Abstract : The heterothallic ascomycete Setosphaeria turcica (anamorph: Exserohlium turcicum) causes turcicum leaf blight on maize and sorghum. A survey was undertaken in Uganda to examine the sorghum – S. turcica interaction in terms of disease severity and incidence, overall fungal population structure, and new resistant resources. 5. Superabsorbent Polymers from the Cell Wall of Zygomycetes Fungi
Abstract : The present thesis presents new renewable, antimicrobial and biodegradable superabsorbent polymers (SAPs), produced from the cell wall of zygomycetes fungi. The cell wall was characterized and chitosan, being one of the most important ingredients, was extracted, purified, and converted to SAP for use in disposable personal care products designed for absorption of different body fluids.
