  1. 1. Quantitative Genetics and Genome Structure in a Wild Population: the Use of a Great Reed Warbler Pedigree

    Author : Mikael Åkesson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; genome mapping ; AFLP; microsatellite; synteny; heterochiasmy; recombination; chicken; great reed warbler ; bird; Genetics; cytogenetics; Genetik; cytogenetik; Animal ecology; trait correlation ; Djurekologi; animal model ; selection; Djurs anatomi och morfologi; animal morphology; Animal anatomy; heritability;

    Abstract : Long-term studies of birds play an important role in the understanding of quantitative traits in natural populations. The relative ease by which individual birds can be monitored and caught in the wild enable us collect detailed information from individuals throughout their life time, sometimes from several generations in a population. 2. 2. Effects of winter-feeding on reindeer’s future ability to utilize natural pastures

    Author : Heidi Rautiainen; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Winter feeding of reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) has become an increasingly common management action in reindeer husbandry in Sweden, Finland, and Norway when natural grazing resources are unavailable due to the loss of grazing grounds, disturbances, and icing events. In the short term, feeding increases survival and reproduction, but the long-term effects on reindeer’s ability to utilize natural pastures have not been investigated. READ MORE

  3. 3. Orthopaedic health, conformation and longevity in riding horses : a genetic and phenotypic study

    Author : Lina Jönsson; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Soundness and longevity of the riding horse play a central role for animal welfare, sport performance and horse owner economy. Routine registration of health traits in horses is rare. Thus, knowledge of genetic variation in health of horses and long term effects on longevity is scarce. READ MORE

  4. 4. Feed efficiency in dairy cows: individual cow variability in component traits

    Author : Abdulai Guinguina; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY;

    Abstract : Feed efficiency (FE) varies between cows, and this variation is linked to the variation in energy metabolism variables. Respiration chambers are needed for measuring energy metabolism variables while individual cow dry matter intake (DMI) records are necessary for measuring FE, but these are difficult to obtain due to cost and logistic constraints. 5. 5. Performance of dairy cows and calves in agro-pastoral production systems

    Author : Christina Johansson; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Seasonal changes in pasture quality and quantity and cattle management routines were examined on 10 farms in southwest Uganda in order to evaluate how these factors affected milk yield, live weight and body condition in cows and daily weight gain in calves in agro-pastoral production systems in a semi-arid environment. Mean available herbage mass ranged between 0. READ MORE
