  1. 16. Trustworthy explanations : Improved decision support through well-calibrated uncertainty quantification

    Author : Helena Löfström; Ulf Seigerroth; Ulf Johansson; Patrick Mikalef; Jönköping University; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Explainable Artificial Intelligence; Interpretable Machine Learning; Decision Support Systems; Uncertainty Estimation; Explanation Methods;

    Abstract : The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has transformed fields like disease diagnosis and defence. Utilising sophisticated Machine Learning (ML) models, AI predicts future events based on historical data, introducing complexity that challenges understanding and decision-making. READ MORE

  2. 17. Water and Carbon Balance Modeling: Methods of Uncertainty Analysis

    Author : John Juston; Per-Erik Jansson; Georg Lindgren; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Modeling; uncertainty analysis; water balance; carbon balance; GLUE; Environmental engineering; Miljöteknik;

    Abstract : How do additional data of the same and/or different type contribute to reducing model parameter and predictive uncertainties? This was the question addressed with two models – the HBV hydrological water balance model and the ICBM soil carbon balance model – that were used to investigate the usefulness of the Generalized Likelihood Uncertainty Estimation (GLUE) method for calibrations and uncertainty analyses.  The GLUE method is based on threshold screening of Monte Carlo simulations using so-called informal likelihood measures and subjective acceptance criterion. 3. 18. From data to decision - learning by probabilistic risk analysis of biological invasions

    Author : Ullrika Sahlin; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; probabilistic models; establishment success; prediction; forecasting; uncertainty; risk; invasive species; Bayesian methods;

    Abstract : Predicting an uncertain future with uncertain knowledge is a challenge. The success of efforts to preserve biodiversity, to maintain biosecurity and to reduce a negative impact from climate change, depend on scientifically based predictions of future events. READ MORE

  4. 19. Uncertainty in Quantitative Risk Analysis - Characterisation and Methods of Treatment

    Author : Marcus Abrahamsson; Lunds universitets centrum för riskanalys och riskhantering (LUCRAM); []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; kvantitativ riskanalys; decision making; safety; quantitative risk analysis; uncertainty analysis; osäkerhetsanalys; säkerhet; beslutsfattande;

    Abstract : The fundamental problems related to uncertainty in quantitative risk analyses, used in decision making in safety-related issues (for instance, in land use planning and licensing procedures for hazardous establishments and activities) are presented and discussed, together with the different types of uncertainty that are introduced in the various stages of an analysis. A survey of methods for the practical treatment of uncertainty, with emphasis on the kind of information that is needed for the different methods, and the kind of results they produce, is also presented. 5. 20. Approaching transformative futures : Discourse and practice in Swedish national transport policy and planning

    Author : Jacob Witzell; Karolina Isaksson; Maria Håkansson; Malin Henriksson; Raine Mäntysalo; KTH; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; transport planning; transport infrastructure; climate mitigation; transformation; planning practice; uncertainty; assessment; Urbana och regionala studier; Urban and Regional Studies;

    Abstract : This thesis concerns the need to transform the transport system to meet climate mitigation objectives. It provides insights into how specific approaches and practices in transport policy and planning affect prospects for transformation. READ MORE
