  1. 1. Galactic Structure Revealed by Space Astrometry

    University dissertation from Lund Observatory, Lund University

    Author : Johan Holmberg; Lunds universitet.; Lund University.; [2001]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Astronomi; cosmic chemistry; Galactic structure; Milky Way Galaxy; Galactic kinematics and dynamics; Galactic chemical evolution; moving groups; solar neighbourhood; dark matter; astrometry; Hipparcos; space research; Astronomy; rymdvetenskap; kosmisk kemi; Space technology; Rymdteknik; Fysicumarkivet A:2001:Holmberg;

    Abstract : This work demonstrates how the structure of our Galaxy, the Milky Way, can be unveiled with the use of space astrometry. It consists of two parts, of which the first is a brief introduction to the fields of Galactic structure, covering the Galaxy's stellar constituents, how the Galaxy was formed and how it has evolved over time, both chemically and kinematically. 2. 2. Molecular gas in the galaxy M83 Its distribution, kinematics, and relation to star formation

    University dissertation from Stockholm : Institutionen för astronomi

    Author : Andreas Andersson Lundgren; Stockholms universitet.; [2004]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Molecular gas; Galaxies; Galaxies individual: M83; Star formation; Galactic dynamics; NATURAL SCIENCES Physics Astronomy and astrophysics; NATURVETENSKAP Fysik Astronomi och astrofysik;

    Abstract : The barred spiral galaxy M83 (NGC5236) has been observed in the 12CO J=1–0 and J=2–1 millimetre lines with the Swedish-ESO Submillimetre Telescope (SEST). The sizes of the CO maps are 100×100, and they cover the entire optical disk. The CO emission is strongly peaked toward the nucleus. READ MORE

  3. 3. The environment of active galactic nuclei : excess counts and the nature of their host clusters

    University dissertation from Stockholm : Department of Astronomy, Stockholm University

    Author : Margrethe Wold; Stockholms universitet.; [2001]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Astronomy; astronomi;

    Abstract : This thesis presents observations of the galaxy environment of active galactic nuclei on galaxy cluster scales. In the first part, we quantify the galaxy environment of a sample of 40 quasars, consisting of equal fractions of radio-loud and radio-quiet sources. The sample covers a narrow range in redshift, 0.5 < z < 0. READ MORE

  4. 4. Ion dynamics and structure of collisionless shocks in space

    University dissertation from Uppsala : Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis

    Author : Andreas Johlander; Uppsala universitet.; Uppsala universitet.; [2019]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Fysik med inriktning mot rymd- och plasmafysik; Physics with specialization in Space and Plasma Physics;

    Abstract : Shock waves form when supersonic flows encounter an obstacle. Like in regular gases, shock waves can form in a plasma - a gas of electrically charged particles. Shock waves in plasmas where collisions between particles are very rare are referred to as collisionless shock waves. READ MORE

  5. 5. Rearrangement of gas in disc galaxies

    University dissertation from Stockholm : Department of Astronomy, Stockholm University

    Author : Núria Piñol Ferrer; Stockholms universitet.; [2013]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Astronomy; astronomi;

    Abstract : Active galactic nuclei and bursts of star formation are two distinct phenomena that amply change their host environments. They are present in a significant number of galaxies at all redshifts. In this thesis, we aim toward a better understanding of the physical processes that allow for the formation and maintenance of these two phenomena. READ MORE
