2. Star-forming Dwarf Galaxies : Internal motions and evolution
Abstract : The study of dwarf galaxies is important in order to better understand the physics of the young universe and how larger galaxies form and evolve. In this work we focus on Blue Compact Galaxies (BCGs) which havemuch enhanced star formation (starbursts), causing blue colours and strong emission line spectra. READ MORE

3. Radio Studies of Circumnuclear Gas in Active Galaxies
Abstract : In this thesis we have used radio interferometry in order to perform high resolution spectral line studies of circumnuclear gas in AGN and starburst galaxies. Amongst the studied objects is the Seyfert 2 NGC5793, for which we find the high opacity HI absorption to be consistent with a 50-100 pc radius atomic disk aligned with the host galaxy disk. 4. Molecular observations of obscured galaxy nuclei
Abstract : It is becoming evident that some (ultra)luminous infrared galaxies ((U)LIRGs) contain compact obscured nuclei (CONs) where luminosities in excess of 10^9 L☉ emerge from inside dusty regions smaller than 100 pc in diameter. Due to the obscured nature of these objects, their inner regions are hidden from examination using optical or infrared lines. READ MORE

5. Molecular gas and ionizing radiation in star-forming galaxies
Abstract : In cosmic history, some of the major changes such as reionization were driven by baryons (i.e. the stars and gas in galaxies), despite the fact that they contribute only few percent to the total mass-energy budget in the Universe. READ MORE
