  1. 1. Quasar host galaxies at intermediate and high redshifts

    Author : Eva Örndahl; Bengt Gustafsson; Jari Kotilainen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Astronomy; Active galaxies; Quasars; Host galaxies; Imaging; Photometry; Magnitudes; Colours; Morphology; Statistical methods; High-redshift; Infrared; Astronomi; Astronomy and astrophysics; Astronomi och astrofysik; Theoretical Astrophysics; teoretisk astrofysik;

    Abstract : Quasars form one of the most energetic phenomena in the universe, and can be traced out to very large redshifts. By studying the galaxies which host the active nuclei, important insights can be gained into the processes that trigger and maintain the quasar powerhouse. READ MORE

  2. 2. Photometry of Resolved Stellar Populations in Local Group Galaxies

    Author : Daniel Faria; Astronomi - Genomgår omorganisation; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Astronomi; Astronomy; Local Group; Galaxy: halo; Galaxies: dwarf; Galaxy: stellar content; Galaxies: photometry; Techniques: photometric; Stars: fundamental parameters;

    Abstract : This thesis presents results from two projects using photometric observations to investigate stellar populations in Local Group galaxies. In the first project, Strömgren photometry is used to study stellar populations in dwarf spheroidal galaxies. READ MORE

  3. 3. Deep photometry of galaxies : to see or not to see /Magnus Näslund

    Author : Magnus Näslund; Nils Bergvall; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Astronomy; Astronomi; Astronomy; astronomi;

    Abstract : The edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 4565 and the distant galaxy cluster MS2255.7+2039 have been studied at optical wavelengths with deep photometry using the 2.56 m Nordic Optical Telescope on La Palma.By careful data reductions we traced the surface brightness of NGC 4565 to faint levels. 4. 4. On the origin and evolution of blue compact galaxies

    Author : Göran A. Östlin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Astronomy; galaxies - compact; formation; evolution; starburst; interactions; dwarf; photometry; kinematics and dynamics; low surface brightness galaxies; Astronomi; Astronomy and astrophysics; Astronomi och astrofysik; astronomi; Astronomy;

    Abstract : This thesis is focused on the origin and evolution of blue compact galaxies (BCGs). BCGs are low mass galaxies characterised by blue colours, low chemical abundances and high star formation rates. The gas consumtion time scale is considerable shorter than the age of the universe and thus the high star formation rate must be transient. READ MORE

  5. 5. A study of blue low surface-brightness galaxies : surface photometry and spectroscopy
