1. The role of galectin-1 in type 2 diabetes. Clinical and experimental studies
Abstract : Aim: The purpose of this thesis was to identify a new agent in the subcutaneous adipose tissue and assess its clinical potential in the context of type 2 diabetes. Study I: Through a combination of microdialysis and mass-spectrometry, we found increased galectin-1 levels in the subcutaneous adipose tissue in a small experimental study of 15 men with and without type 2 diabetes. 2. Therapeutic Cancer Vaccines Targeting Molecules Associated with Tumor Angiogenesis
Abstract : Induction of an endogenous antibody response by therapeutic vaccination could provide an alternative to cost-intensive monoclonal antibody-based treatments for cancer. Since the target of a cancer vaccine will most likely be a self-antigen, self-tolerance of the immune system must be circumvented. READ MORE

3. Identification of galectins as novel inflammatory mediators
Abstract : The human neutrophils play important roles in the host defence against invading microorganisms. To eliminate bacteria or other invaders the neutrophils have to leave the bloodstream and cross the endothelium, migrate through the extracellular matrix towards the site of infection and phagocytose the prey to ultimately kill it. 4. Functional properties of galectin-3. Beyond the sugar binding
Abstract : Contemporary diseases like diabetes, asthma, atherosclerosis etc. are marked by chronic inflammation, often supported by the activity of different macrophages. Proteins from galectin family were found to contribute to disease pathophysiology. Therefore, there is an intensive interest in understanding different galectin functions. READ MORE

5. Effects of galectins and antibodies in HIV infection; Novel Assays
Abstract : The high variability of the HIV envelope glycoproteins (Env), and their heavy glycan coating, contributes to the limited host immune control. Still, broadly neutralizing antibodies (bnAbs) are found in some chronically infected HIV-infected individuals, which has spurred the research on antibody-based vaccines. READ MORE
