  1. 21. The mucus layer and other barriers to intestinal drug absorption

    Author : Agneta Wikman Larhed; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmacy; FARMACI; PHARMACY; FARMACI; galenisk farmaci; Pharmaceutics;

    Abstract : The extraepithelial mucus layer acts as a barrier to the absorption and diffusion of drugs. Three in vitro models have been used for studies of this and other intestinal barriers to drug transport. A drug absorption model based on monolayers of the mucus-producing human intestinal goblet HT29-H cell line was developed. READ MORE

  2. 22. The Horizontal Ussing Chamber Method in Studies of Nasal Drug Delivery : Method Development and Applications Using Different Formulations

    Author : Karin Östh; Anna-Lena Ungell; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmacy; FARMACI; PHARMACY; FARMACI; galenisk farmaci; Pharmaceutics;

    Abstract : The results from this thesis leads to the following conclusions; HUM is a useful tool that fills a gap in the in vitro methods previously available to study nasal drug delivery. Using HUM, the pig respiratory nasal mucosa can obtain acceptable viability and retain it longer than the period of time needed for a transport experiment. READ MORE

  3. 23. Oral delivery of macromolecules formulated with permeation enhancers

    Author : Staffan Berg; Christel Bergström; Nigel Davies; Andreas Hugerth; David Brayden; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Oral peptide delivery; permeation enhancer; sodium caprate; oral drug delivery; intestinal absorption of macromolecules; Biofarmaci; Biopharmaceutics; Galenisk farmaci; Pharmaceutics;

    Abstract : Therapeutic macromolecules including peptides, proteins, and nucleotide-based ones (such as antisense oligonucleotides and RNAs) have great potential as drug candidates. One drawback is that they typically need to be administered parenterally via subcutaneous, intramuscular or intravenous injections. READ MORE

  4. 24. Computational and Experimental Models for the Prediction of Intestinal Drug Solubility and Absorption

    Author : Christel A. S. Bergström; Per Artursson; Han van de Waterbeemd; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmaceutics; aqueous drug solubility; melting point; intestinal drug permeability; pH-dependent solubility; multivariate data analysis; molecular descriptors; molecular surface area; in silico modeling; drug absorption; Galenisk farmaci; Pharmaceutics; Galenisk farmaci;

    Abstract : New effective experimental techniques in medicinal chemistry and pharmacology have resulted in a vast increase in the number of pharmacologically interesting compounds. However, the number of new drugs undergoing clinical trial has not augmented at the same pace, which in part has been attributed to poor absorption of the compounds. READ MORE

  5. 25. Prolonged Drug Release from Gels, using Catanionic Mixtures

    Author : Tobias Bramer; Katarina Edsman; Per Hansson; Stefan Ulvenlund; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Pharmaceutics; gel; catanionic; vesicle; micelle; controlled release; diffusion; surfactant; drug delivery; Galenisk farmaci;

    Abstract : The use of catanionic drug-surfactant mixtures was proven to be an efficient novel method of obtaining prolonged drug release from gels. It was shown that various commonly used drug compounds are able to form catanionic mixtures together with oppositely charged surfactants. READ MORE
