1. Cytomegalovirus Infection in Heart and Lung Transplant Patients with focus on long-term outcome
Abstract : Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is a common opportunistic infection after heart and lung transplantation. The aims of this thesis were to relate the incidence and severity of CMV infection and disease to different forms of antiviral prevention and to evaluate whether CMV is a risk factor for bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS) after lung transplantation and coronary artery vasculopathy (CAV) after heart transplantation. 2. Intraocular Microdialysis
Abstract : The method of microdialysis has been adapted for ocular use. It is a technique for monitoring concentrations of different molecules in a tissue in vivo. It is based on the principle of diffusion through a semipermeable membrane. The membrane is mounted on a soft plastic shaft, connected to an inlet and an outlet tube. READ MORE

3. The chimeric SCID mouse in studies of the human immune system
Abstract : Several methods have been developed to transfer components of the human immune system into mice. In particular, the adoptive transfer of human Iymphoid cells or tissues into mice with severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID mice) has demonstrated the general applicability of such an approach. 4. Two novel combination therapies of glioblastoma multiforme from a Cx43 perspective : studies of in vitro models
Abstract : The group of patients suffering from the malignant brain tumour glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) have a median survival of only about one year. Thus, new treatment strategies are urgently needed. Gap junctions are intercellular channels, permitting intercellular transfer of water soluble substances. READ MORE

5. Investigation of antiviral and anticancer nucleoside analog substrate recognition of drosophila melanogaster and herpes virus deoxyribonucleoside kinases
Abstract : The deoxyribonucleoside kinase of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster (Dm-dNK) is a multisubstrate enzyme that phosphorylates pyrimidine and purine deoxyribonucleosides as well as several anticancer and antiviral nucleoside analogs. Dm-dNK is sequence related to the human deoxycytidine kinase (dCK), deoxyguanosine kinase (dGK) and thymidine kinase 2 (M), as well as to the herpes simplex virus type-1 thymidine kinase (Hsv-1 TK).
