6. Neural limits of visual resolution
Abstract : Aims: The aim of this thesis was to formulate a model of retinal neural circuitry in humans based on morphological estimates of retinal cone and ganglion cell populations, to compare results based on this model to psychophysical measurements of visual resolution and identify the retinal neural factors that limit visual resolution.Materials & Methods: Total displacement of central ganglion cells from foveal cones was obtained by estimating the length of fibers of Henle in four human retinas along the nasal or vertical hemi-meridians. 7. Strategies in Cochlear Nerve Regeneration, Guidance and Protection : Prospects for Future Cochlear Implants
Abstract : Today, it is possible to restore hearing in congenitally deaf children and severely hearing-impaired adults through cochlear implants (CIs). A CI consists of an external sound processor that provides acoustically induced signals to an internal receiver. READ MORE

8. The diverse role of laminin isoforms in neuronal cells, human mast cells and blood platelets
Abstract : The close interaction of cells with other cells and with extracellular matrix (ECM) components is a prerequisite in a number of biological activities. During development of the nervous system, axons often navigate a considerable distance depending on the type of molecular factors they encounter. READ MORE

9. Transplantation of mesenchymal stem cells and injections of microRNA as therapeutics for nervous system repair
Abstract : Traumatic injuries to the spinal cord (SCI) and peripheral nerve (PNI) affect several thousand people worldwide every year. At present, there is no effective treatment for SCI and despite continuous improvements in microsurgical reconstructive techniques for PNI, many patients are still left with permanent, devastating neurological dysfunction. 10. Spatial Vision in Birds: Anatomical investigation of spatial resolving power
Abstract : Avian eyes are big both in relative and absolute terms, thus the importance of vision to birds is obvious. Even though the general eye plan is rather conservative throughout the group, there is a great variation in visual capabilities. READ MORE
