6. Technology and properties of InP-based photonic crystal structures and devices
Abstract : Photonic crystals (PhCs) are periodic dielectric structures that exhibit a photonic band gap; a range of wavelengths for which light propagation is forbidden. 2D PhCs exhibit most of the properties as their three dimension counterparts with a compatibility with standard semiconductor processing techniques such as epitaxial growth, electron beam lithography, Plasma deposition/etching and electromechanical lapping/polishing. 7. Antenna Integrated Superconducting Mixers
Abstract : This thesis investigates the prospects of some different superconducting mixers integrated with planar antennas for the millimeter and submillimeter regime. Two kinds of Superconductor/Insulator/Superconductor (SIS) tunnel junctions for use in mixers have been fabricated; Nb/PbBi edge junctions and Nb trilayer junctions. READ MORE

8. Magnetism in Band Gap Engineered Sputtered MgxZn(1-x)O Thin Films
Abstract : This dissertation presents a comprehensive study of the intrinsic room temperature ferromagnetism, RTFM, in technologically important thin films of ZnO, MgO, Mg@ZnO, the so-called d0–magnets that do not contain any intrinsic magnetic elements. We also present the first report on magnetism in Mn doped MgO films fabricated by dc magnetron sputtering. READ MORE

9. Interactions and Interference in Mesoscopic Systems: Josephson Current through Quantum Dots and Josephson Junction Arrays
Abstract : The focus of the thesis is on the interplay between interactions and interference effects in mesoscopic systems. More specifically, the two main projects included deal with Coulomb interactions and Josephson effect in two superconductor-normal metal systems: (i) a Josephson junction array and (ii) a superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) system in which the normal part is a quantum dot. 10. Crack-junctions : Bridging the gap between nano electronics and giga manufacturing
Abstract : Obtaining both nanometer precision of patterning and parallel fabrication on wafer-scale is currently not possible in conventional fabrication schemes. Just as we are looking beyond semiconductor technologies for next-generation electronics and photonics, our efforts turn to new ways of producing electronic and photonic interfaces with the nanoscale.
