11. Interactions between non-polar surfaces in water: Fokus on talc, pitch and surface roughness effects
Abstract : The aim of this thesis work was to gain understanding of the interactions between talc mineral and surfaces, liquids and chemicals relevant for industrial applications, such as pulp and paper. Talc is used in the pulp and paper industry as a filler pigment, in control of pitch (lipophilic extractives) deposits and as a coating pigment. READ MORE

12. Reactive Sputtering of Cubic-Phase BN:C and Nanostructured B-N-C Films : Growth, Microstructure, and Mechanical Properties
Abstract : Synthesis, structure, and mechanical property related issues in the carbon-containing boron nitride (BN:C) system have been studied. Magnetron sputtering, comprising a B4C target in mixed Ar-N2 discharges and deposition parameters of low ion energy, high ion-to-neutral flux ratio, and substrate temperatures ... READ MORE

13. Carbothermal synthesis of nano-structured metal, carbides and nitrides, using solution processed precursors; from precursor to product
Abstract : This thesis describes how solution chemical based carbothermal syntheses can be used for the synthesis of nanostructured zirconium carbide and nitride nanophase powders as well as a nickel-metal coating on NbC for use as a sintering agent. The focus is on the development of novel synthesis routes using atomic or small nanoscale level mixing of the metal oxide and carbon source in the starting precursors, enabling the use of lower synthesis temperatures and non-agglomerated nanosized powders. 14. Theoretical Studies of Surface Forces and Phase Equilibria
Abstract : The interaction between large hydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces in aqueous solution is investigated, using Metropolis Monte Carlo simulations and density functional theory. Special attention is devoted to the solvation force and its dependence on the nature of the solvent-solvent and solvent-surface interactions. READ MORE
